How the Art Arena Works:

The Art Arena serves as a place to submit your own artwork so that it can be viewed and rated against other artists. Please read and adhere to the rules below--failure to do so may result in your images being disapproved/removed from the Arena.

* A maximum of two images per artist will be approved each day to ensure that each artist gets a more even amount of exposure. Please submit no more than 2 images in one day.

* All images are approved by moderators before they are displayed in the Arena.

* Pictures may take an indefinite amount of time to be approved. Currently there is a backlog of entries from April 2008 so it may take awhile for moderators to go through it, but rest assured that they are always approving new ones!

* By default, voting will always show you a random picture.

Image Rules:

* Subject = Gaia is an anime and fantasy-based website so please only submit art that fits in with that theme. Images that are not anime/fantasy related will be disapproved.

* Size = All images submitted into the Art Arena must be no bigger than 640x640 pixels and 300k (300,000 bytes). If your image goes over that it will be disapproved. This also includes animated gifs.

* Theft = Do not steal or submit artwork that you did not create. Art theft is a serious offense here on Gaia and you can be banned if you do it. This also includes altering or editing other artists work (such as wallpapers, RP character edits, etc.) If you see artwork in the Art Arena that may be copied or stolen, please report it in the Art Infringement Report Sticky and a moderator will handle it as soon as they can.

* Copies/Traces = Traces and drawings copied by eye are not allowed in the Art Arena. Taking an already existing image and copying it, then submitting it to the Art Arena is not allowed and is treated as art theft. You can take an already existing character from an anime/video game/comic/etc., but be creative and come up with your own pose. Do not copy someone else's pose. For more information on copying, please refer to our Copy FAQ. Repeat offenders who are caught copying may also be reported and banned (see the Theft section).

* Effort = Please put some effort in your drawings! Do not submit quick doodles or stick figures you made on the oekaki board in 5 minutes, they will be disapproved. We know that not everyone is a skilled artist, but we will not approve art that someone took no time or effort into creating.

* Censor = Since Gaia is a PG-13 site, we ask that all submissions respect that and keep their work appropriate for that rating. Please do not submit images of naked people, anything depicting extreme violence, and drawings with inappropriate/sexual themes.

* Format = When submitting your work into the Art Arena, please be sure to only submit them as .png, .gif, or .jpg files. If you submit .bmps or images in any other format they will be disapproved.

* Pixel Dolls = Dolls are not allowed in the Art Arena. Even if credit is given to another dollmaker or if you made your own base, we still have no way of knowing if the base or doll was stolen.

* Gaia Avatar Edits = These are not allowed in the Art Arena for the same reason as above. The person submitting did not make the base, so please do not submit Gaia avatar edits.

* Collaborations = If you and a friend decide to go half-and-half on creating an image and then wish to submit it to the Art Arena, you may. However, any collaboration submitted must have the consent from the other artist to do so and give proper credit to him/her in their image comments.

* 3D images = 3D images are allowed to be submitted so long as they fit within the themes appropriate for the Art Arena. Anime and fantasy-styled 3D art is acceptable. A 3d model of a cube, island, house, car, etc. are not.

* Landscapes = Pure landscape art is not acceptable in the Art Arena. If a landscape is used as a background for a fantasy or anime-themed work of art, that is acceptable. As a stand alone work of art, landscapes will not be accepted. So, a drawing/painting of a mountain range with a river flowing towards it will not be allowed unless you have a fantasy or anime theme as the focus of the image.

* Portraits = Portraits follow the same rule as landscapes. If you are using them to create a work of art in which the theme fits into our rules, it is acceptable. Stand alone portraits will not be accepted. So if you draw a life-like portrait of an anime character or a fantasy creature/character then it will be permitted into the Art Arena. A portrait of your best friend, an actor, or a person you just sketched on the street will not be accepted.

* Photographs and Photomanipulations = Photographs and photo-manipulations are not allowed. The only exception would be for user-made statues, murals, plushies, etc that fit within the anime/fantasy theme. See below for details.

* Statues/Murals/Plushies/etc. = These follow the same rules portraits and landscapes do, so any work submitted into the Art Arena must have an anime or fantasy theme. They also must follow the same copy and trace rules stated above. Models are not allowed, since the original design is not your own work. If you make a plushie and want to submit it, make sure it is not a copy of an already existing plushie.

Because we want to avoid theft when dealing with statues, murals, and plushies, we ask that when you take the photograph of your work, please have your Gaia online name and the date you completed it clearly written somewhere next to it. We suggest an index card and you can just lean it against your work. Make sure it is clear. If we cannot read it, we will not accept it. If there is no card at all, it will not be accepted.

Image Hosting:

* Both new image uploads and new image URLs cause image statistics to be reset. Make sure you are ready to start over if you decide to update an already highly rated image. We can not recover accidentally overwritten images.

* Please ensure that the server you host your pictures on allows remote linking and does not limit bandwidth usage. We will not be held responsible for exceeding your bandwidth for posted artwork.
