So, earlier this month I was talking with my friend about a certain artist. This artist has a very distinct artistic style, and up until this little chat we had my friend was actually a bit of a fan.

Then I told him about how this particular artist had drawn some...pornography or something featuring hermaphroditic anthropomorphic snake people/nagas and pointed him in the direction of the images and a webpage chronicling the artist’s n00bish behavior on the intarwebz.

At first it was good for a laugh, but then later on I actually found out that he was kind of upset about it. A couple of Days ago two of that artist's works made it to the front page of the favorites section of DA. I informed him and he seemed a little...miffed about it?

"How is that person on the front page? She's disgusting...why would any one fave a person like that? EW!"

And I was all "Whaaaaaaa?"

You liked her just a second ago!

So now I'm Asking Ye...

Does knowing that the artist behind the art is a "terrible" person make you dislike the art?

Does knowing that many other people have a disagreement with an artist make you not like them?

Do you thing that gaining a bad reputation in online communities like Deviantart could really hurt your art career in the real world?

In general, what influence does a bad rep have on an artist and her art?

I've always liked to consider the two (the artist and the art) as two separate things...but other people not so much it seems...

EDITS: For the record, this wasn't meant to portray any artist in a negative light. I'm pretty much have no opinion about them, but I thought that they were a good example of an artist gaining a bad rep because of personal disagreement and not necessarily because of poor art skills.

On another but slightly the same note it should be taken into consideration that most accounts of her will most likely be biased, because people like drama better.

Well to me the artwork and the artist are one and the same if I do not like the artist I will not like their work no matter how good it is
Will you really dislike it or will you simply not acknowledge the fact that you actually do like it?

??? whee
I'll really depends on the artist I think. Well, if he prochaimed some racist or violent things, I won't like it anyway and would surely have a mental block with their art. That already happened.
But most of the time, the artist behaviour can be seen through is art anyway.

lol, snapesnogger? ninja

Rep doesnt affect an image too directly for me - it depends on the type of art and subjects. sometimes with local artists if I dislike the attitude presented through discussion with them it might bitter their art for me - I might see the same sort of disagreement incorporated in their art as I did in speaking.

if it is just an illustration of a common subject I would probably disregard it.

If anything, her attitude will hurt whatever career she hopes for. Critique, no matter how nicely given, is seen as an attack. This makes any editors job impossible.

*coughs* Anyway, how one acts CAN effect people's perception of their art, because you're more likely to notice the flaws in their work. It's kinda like going to a movie or playing a game already hating it for the concept....it has to be ******** for you to even acknowledge that it's good.

Presentation is important. It's what makes qualified people not get the jobs and not-as-qualified people get them. I would neither hire nor want to work with someone such a Snogger because of how she presents herself.
We're human, so I think it's often difficult for us to completely separate personal feelings for the creator, if we have any, from the art they produce. I don't think this is a flaw, as such, just our nature.

I'm a pretty liberal person, but with regards to artists drawing pr0n, furry art's probably the best example: the times I've found out favourite artists and even artist friends of mine are spamming furbid with hasty pr0n pics to make a fast buck on people who get off on that kind of thing, I can say pretty honestly it has changed my perception of them. Not necessarily negatively, but there have definitely been changes. I suppose because art for most people is more than just the pictures you produce - it entails your ideas, mindsets, likes, dislikes, things that are important to you, your motivations for art in the first place. And once you're aware of that personality and other behaviour behind an artist, it becomes difficult to disentangle that knowledge from the art being produced.
The artist's behavior certainly affects my opinion of the art, but not quite that much. If the artist is a total jerk, I can still like the art. I probably just won't compliment the artist on it blaugh
Its pretty much one in the same for me. If the artist is rude and immature person then well..Im not going to support them by leaving comments or favoriting them.

I can appreciate the fact that they might have talent or are probably a good artist but I refuse to support that person and just outright ignore them.
I've known of plenty of artists that had interesting, attractive art but were less-than-swell personality-wise. As others have said, I may admire the art but not want to associate with the person behind the art.

I don't believe that "the art and the artist are one and the same", and if I liked a piece of artwork, I certainly wouldn't deny I liked it based on my opinion of the artist. (Although I probably wouldn't volunteer my opinion unless asked in such a case.) That sort of behavior is, to me, every bit as foolish as that of certain artists who have made public asses of themselves.
Oh yes her. This particular person, her art sorta annoyed me from the start and when I found out about how horrible of a person she is and how nasty some of her pr0n is, I didn't feel so bad hating her art.

And for other people, if they're really stupid, or arrogent, or get offended by stupid things, I'll stop liking their art because the person is so ugh-ish.
I'm certainly not going to dislike an artist because they draw porn, nudity, or anything not generally socially acceptable. I do dislike an artist for being a jerk, snob, or a brat. There are plenty, unfortunately.

I also won't mention names, but DA is full of artists that think they are too good for anyone else, especially those with tons and tons of page hits. Maybe they are just flooded with watch requests and people begging them for art on notes, but they generally don't pay attention to less popular people. Not saying all people with lots of page hits are like that on DA, but that's been my experience.

On a nicer note, one of the artists that DOESN'T do this is Wen-M. @_@ He actually apologized to me for not replying to my comments all the time
It has some effect, yes, but I try to see the art as its own picture, not as a background of the artist. If the picture means something like their other pictures, then I don't like it, but if it has a meaning not relating to anything crude, then I try to treat it as a regular picture.

I normally don't care what fetishes or ideas that the artist's have, so I try to keep an open mind about their art. This iseasier for me over theInternet because I normally don't personally KNOW these people and can get over the fact that they really might be racist or into something I don't agree with and can seperate the artist from the art itself.

IRL, though... there are a few people that I will not WANT to look at, because I know them personally. Maybe it's wrong of me to be prejudice against them, but if every single piece they do is a reflection of their bitter hatred of a certain subject or race group, then why should I give them my time if they're not even going to listen to me?

I have an issue with one of my classmates; he is a firm Bushhater and everything he does is an all out attack against him or anyone who stands w/ him. I don't hate Bush, but I don't like him either, but since I don't agree w/ her views 100%, I might as well be a Bush-Lover to him. So I don't even critique him anymore. I know I should be focusing on the art itself, but everytime I see art done by him, all I can think aboutis how much I want to deport him to some Anti-American nation, where he probably belongs.
