I'm opening a separate section on my forum that's going to display each picture, and you'll need a password to get in. This section is where we decide what makes it into the manga, and what doesn't. Allyson, myself and perhaps a few select others will be the only ones able to visit that thread.

Once we have decided we will contact each person and tell them our answer for their artwork.

Some people might get a "Yes, we're using this as a cover."
Some might get a "We're using this as an insert"
Others could get a "We like your style, but this is not what we want for a cover/back cover/insert. If you would draw (whatever we decide) we could use it as an insert or back cover"
FEW will get a "We love this, we're using it, would you like to become a staff member for merchandise?"

After my published novel, Predator Turned Prey, became a hit, I started thinking of other things to do that might be fun for the fans and give them something Predator Turned Prey related to see while waiting for the sequel.

So, I made a shop full of merchandise and started looking for people who would make hats, plushies, posters, etc... (still looking for more, PM me if you're interested wink )

And that was great, but not enough...

Three years ago, I got an idea... While talking to my back cover artist and friend, Allyson Boeckman, I told her that I'd been toying with the thought of having my own manga. I loved receiving fanart, and had kept requesting scenes from the book.

"It would be cool to just have all the scenes." I said, not thinking too much would come from it.

Allyson, however, suddenly became enthusiastic and swallowed the idea up. "Let's do it! Let's make a PTP based Manga!'

So... we did!

This manga has sold terrifically! We give out copies as examples, too! It has landed Allyson a job with Jack Mangan creating a manga of his story Spherical Tomi.

However, it's not done yet.

While browsing through some other mangas, I noticed Guest Art. Some had special covers, back covers, inserts and more!

I started thinking... If this can work so well for us, why not open the opportunity to others?

And that's what this is! Your chance to get your artwork on a manga!

And now, a bit about the book:

Predator Turned Prey is about Hunter, a thirteen year old slave in a world full of deception and depravity.

The story is set in Valhan, a mystical fantasy world, in 1776. Hunter is the property of his new owner, a spoiled rich girl nearly a year younger than him, Lady Miraina Lilith. She receives him as an early birthday present and treats him more like a pet than a person.

There are many slaves, called Servants, residing at Lilith Manor, but Hunter is different from all of them.

Hunter is half Anasien; a race of anthropomorphic animal people that were either slaughter or forced into hiding only tear years prior to the beginning of Predator Turned Prey. He is forced to live on both sides of the line, seeing the treachery from both angles and burdened with the knowledge that it does not have to be this way.

Not long after his arrival at Lilith manor, Hunter meets another ‘servant’. Matsi. She is the older sister he never had, the angel who protects him even when it endangers herself. She gives him his only connection to anything besides the beastly life he is forced to live… and even though he must hide what and who he really is, Hunter feels he owes his very life to Matsi and her friends.

After a cataclysmic event that results in Hunter being reminded how cruel this world has become, he takes advantage of the event that his new master, Lady Miraina, has also been forced to see that cruelty. Hunter puts it upon himself to teach Miraina the truths of their world, to show her and her friends how things should be, and why they changed.

He knows it will be a very risky and difficult task. Living a double life always is. On one hand he’s a disobedient human slave talking with the other servants about his plan for a revolution, on the other side he is an Anasien Bengal teaching the masters the truths they were never supposed to learn.

Both sides exist. Good and evil, write and wrong, darkness and light. The hardest part is staying in that gray world, for it is the only true place. If you are blinded by the light that you cannot see the darkness, you let evil walk right past you, but if you keep in the shadows with your back to the light, you miss the help that could be reaching out to you and hurt those that which gives others hope.

In the end… slavery must be abolished.

Sacrifices must be made.

Comfort is not worth human life.

And Heroes become Legends.

This contest is mainly for the cover of chapter 3! However, I have noticed that there are a LOT of great artists out there, so I'm going to include random suggestions that will work for other chapters.

ALSO! If you have the book, you can create covers for any chapter from 3 and beyond! (Though, if it's a spoiler, please PM it to me)

I also encourage people to make up their own ideas! These suggestions are mostly for people who can't think up anything, and/or who have not read the book.

This chapter comes right after chapter 2, and just before chapter 4. I know, that's a bit overdone, but I figured I should stick to tradition.

It focuses highly on Mira trying to anger Hunter and get him to obey her. In the Manga there is going to be a pretty funny though bubble scene involving Hunter's thoughts on Mira trying to get him to play Fetch.
Chapter 3 is also the first chapter where Matsi is introduced!

This chapter is famous for Hunter's line: “I, Lady Miraina, am a hybrid. Part Human. Part Anasien cat.”

Characters: Hunter, Mira and Matsi.

K… so my idea is to have Hunter, full body, in the center. Head dropped- staring down at his feet, shoulders shrugging, arms mostly limp, turned so the thumbs are outward, at a slight angle to his body to accentuate the ‘I don’t know’ shrug. Tail wrapped around either one or both legs, like how some people bite their lip, he wraps his tail. In, above him, kinda faded in the background, would be two head shot versions of him. On one side would be the Hunter at the beginning of the book (No spots, mostly human in appearance, scared, quiet). His eyes lay on the full body Hunter, kinda anxious and afraid. He still wears the hair dye, he looks submissive and the collar is heavy on his neck, with the chain hanging down so it’s behind the full body Hunter and up to another head shot Hunter; this one with the jaguar spots, no more dye, and looking lively and strong, and trying to be happy. He could be looking at full body Hunter… just try to make it seem like he’s saying, “it’ll be hard, but it’s worth it!”

Could have the chain meet full body Hunter’s collar and maybe the chain from his own color is in his hands, resting in his fingers, loosely grasped. The caption would be “I can’t decide.” It’s a leap of faith, should he keep life as it is and try to make the best out of it… or should he betray everything he’s been raised to believe in order to find freedom?

Everyone wants to know hot to have the best chance at winning!

There are a few ways!!

The best way is to draw something *laughs* biggrin

Also, feel free to ask questions! "Would this person do this?" "is this out of character?" feel free to! "Does this outfit work?" "Is this many chains OK?" "Is this appropriate" Ask away! You can even post ideas and as for feedback before you draw anything!

The best way to be chosen, is to be original! Fit the characters and the scene as best you can!

The best chance is to have a copy of the book... then you can do any chapter you want! There may be an AMAZING cover for chapter 3 done by someone else, then you can go "well, my favorite chapter is 17... I've got a great idea for it" and draw that! It increases your chances a TON because you might be the ONLY entry for that chapter!

But owning the book isn't a requirement, nonono! You can just go over chapter 3, study the examples, go over the character descriptions, ask questions, take note on others work and see what I like best about it!

Visit the website, look through the examples, ask questions, and just do your best ^_^

Most importantly, have fun. Don't rush, take your time, doodle till an idea comes... whatever helps!

Dress: Everyone's outfits in the book have a Victorian theme despite the book being set in 1776. Clothing better fit for the 1700's will work, though! As will slight modifications on the Victorian outfits. It is important to note that you should forget most of what you know about clothing from the 1700's. In the book, the kids clothes are slightly different from the adults, which didn't happen in the 1700's, and they wouldn't wear wigs or do their hair up extremely high unless it was a masquerade (much different from the 1700s where it was common for nobility). No one wears wigs unless they are bald and thus have a reason to.
Mira is from a very wealthy family, her clothes would match.
Favorite color: Red
Appearance: Mira is human. Rich, snob of a noblewoman.
Notes: She has her ears pierced. (Just once in both ears) Mira is the puppet master, or so she believes. She wants to control everything and she'll scream and cry and pout till she gets her way! She controls her parents almost as if they were slaves themselves, and takes orders from no one. Typical spoiled rich girl! Hunter is different, though. Hunter does not bow down to her wishes, he does his best to show her that this world has become wrong, and Mira is willing to listen only because she wants Hunter to be her best friend. The instant he shows her that might not happen, she'll easily revert back to her old self.
Rules: Remember, she’s the bad guy! Most of the time… All of the time, really, but she likes to pretend.

Hair style: His hair is exactly like jaguar fur and goes down to his chin, or is cut so it goes down to just below where ears would be if he were human, and can be pulled back, with his bangs still hanging down. (biggest thing we learned from fanart… hide his ears when he’s not in his demi form… all pity Ally who has to spend 3 days with me ranting about if they should or should not show, and what they’d look like.)
Age: 12-13
Dress: PLEASE NOTE! Hunter has a steel collar. It's metal, and it's silver. I was just unable to find a Gaia avatar that fit that. ALSO! His gloves should always cover his fingers. They're designed to hide his claws.
Hunter is a servant. If you draw him with blonde hair, his clothes consist of gray slacks, black boots that go up to his knees (1700 fashion), black gloves (He has a few different gloves. One of them can be Cloud Style from Advent Children), and a gray shirt distressed to the point where he already tore the sleeves off (if you include sleeves, they should have some tears in them). If he has his spots, he can still wear that, or something better. He is a slave, but wealthy nobles usually gave there slaves nice clothes since it made them look all the more wealthy, and because, in the book, slavery is a new thing. They don’t want to make it look like they are the monsters they are by owning slaves, so they give them nice clothes and pretend the slaves are just ‘servants’
Appearance: Hunter is half jaguar. His tail shows at all time and has the same coloring as his hair except the tip. Six inches from the tip up is solid black. His tail is fairly long and goes down past his feet, so he keeps it curved most of the time. In his demi form, he has jaguar ears on top of his head (catboy style) claws, etc. He can be in a picture with anyone! He doesn't like Mira at all in the beginning, but eventually they get along once his spots appear.
Notes: Hunter is half JAGUAR. Not leopard, pay attention to the spots smile Jaguar Spots. Leopard Spots. Hunter is the hero of the story! He, like any slave over the age of 10, was born free and then caged (hence the title!) Hunter lives in a world separated from both humans and Anasiens because he was born half, and often has trouble deciding what world he belongs in. He cannot be a hunter because he is part prey according to the humans, and worried that he cannot fit in with the Anasiens because of his human side... Hunter decides his mission is to unite the two sides, because he was born to both, and this the best candidate to do this. He is openly friendly with the other slaves, but does not let them know he is part Anasien... many of the other slaves blame the Anasiens for their situation, so Hunter fears what will happen if they find out what he really is. He hides his tail with coats when he can, and the other servants assume the spots in his hair were dyed by the masters to make him look more like a pet. His eyes they cannot explain, but he is the only hybrid in existence, that anyone knows of, so they just assume any abnormalities are in their minds.
Rules: Hunter’s tail is not prehensile. He can’t hang from it, swing from it, use it to grab anything. He’s a cat. He has claws, though! He can climb with them!

Dress: James is an educator in his late twenties. He would not be dressed like a servant, but also would not wear something Miraina's father would. James would be considered very wealthy by our standards, but in their world he is middle class since there are only 3 classes. Rich, middle, slave.
Favorite color: Silver
Appearance: James is Human
Notes: James is a good guy all through the story. He is employed by the Lilith family, but they also consider him a friend. He usually has some sort of briefcase with him. He studies The Comet Despair and the existence of Anasiens, and thus is enthralled by Hunter's existence. He is more willing to change than Mira is, and often questions if the practice of slaver is at all justified or if the human race is simply repeating past mistakes that led to the end of the world once before.
Rules: James is a good guy. He would never really be in a scene with any of the servants except Hunter and spends a good deal of time with Miraina, as he is her tutor.

Dress: "He
was dressed in a uniform Hunter had never seen before, but
seemed to be oddly-colored armor. The human knights and
soldiers Hunter had seen in armor always had silver, black,
or gray, but the armor this Anasien rat wore was silver with
a red color forming patterns and markings of stripes. The red
covered the majority of the armor while the silver was only
on the chest plate. The red nearly matched Hunter’s jacket
except that his jacket was muted while the red in the armor
sparkled.
The armor also only covered his chest, legs, and forearms
up to his elbow. Under the armor was a long sleeved cotton
shirt in a brownish-yellow color as well as pants of the same color tucked into oddly-shaped brown boots that only went
halfway to the man’s knees and seemed to be formed to fit
the large rat Anasien feet." -- Predator Turned Prey.
The armor is smooth, it's made to be very easy to move in, it's not meant to be very useful in combat, more of a protection that'll be good enough while escaping from a conflict, as in book 1, the Anasians have no plans on attacking the humans.

There are no shoulder guards. Nor does the armor have any sort of spikes. Amadayus is wearing a long sleeved shirt of the same color of his armor, only his chest, forearms and legs are covered.

No gauntlets, really. Leather gloves, thicker than Hunter's and of the same red earthy color as his armor, they go over the metal vambraces a bit.

The armor buckles at the side, under the arms, on both sides, in a more traditional look. Two small hinges on the shoulders let the armor be put on over the head (Amadayus has to look up while putting his armor on since his face isn't flat like a Humans) and then there are metal clasps that keep the armor closed.

The metal armor goes to the bottom (where the ribs stop) of his stomach, and is flat, except where there is a shape like a shield where the silver seems to originate from (like roots of a tree), then there is leather down just past his waste, to protect his kidneys.

The bracers do not go over his knees as it would hinder movement.

As for the designs, for book 1, there are no major symbols on the armor. Amadayus's armor, DOES have a phoenix in a bright red on his back, though, in not a lot of detail.

The armor designs over all... The armor, over all, is a deep firebrick red with a lighter firebrick for the phoenix on his back.

The silver makes marking of many types, you can't really make a mistake. They are thin silver streaks forming tiger like stripes, spirals, swirling like mist. A reminder of the Red Mist that the humans used against the Anasians. (I'm working on getting an example of his armor.)
Favorite color: Turquoise.
Appearance: Amadayus is a rat Anasien.
Notes: Amadayus's hair changes color as it grows. Amadayus is a knight in Revoc, the hidden city of the Anasiens. Amadayus would never hide his face unless forced to. Amadayus is free. He is from Revoc, the hidden city of the Anasiens, and is appauled at what the human world has become.
Rules: Amadayus does not meet anyone but Hunter in the story. He is only in the story for a short time, but is an important character smile He is free!

Dress: Matsi is a slave. Her uniform is a white cotton dress with a black apron, sort of a reverse French maid.
Favorite color: Gold
Appearance: Masti is human slave ^_^
Notes: She has pierced ears (one in each ear) and long, long eyelashes.
Rules: Matsi's name means Sweet and Brave, and that is who she is! She is a gentle, good natured person who, like the other slaves, just does not deserve the horrors she was forced into. Matsi is a romantic at heart, she was enslaved when trying to protect her childhood sweet hear, an Anasian Impala when they were seven. She lives in the world with a broken heart, but smiles through it. She is Hunter's protector through most of the story. Hunter considers her his angel.

For those of you who color better than you draw, and for those of you just good at coloring!

It's great lineart you can color and post here! Ally, Robin, and Myself (Though be warned the main judges are Ally and I) will look them over and decide which we like best.

Q: Do you want the image in color, or would you prefer manga-like screen tones?
A: The covers are all going to be in color. If you want to do a "insert" comic (one that's inside the comic, almost like a chapter break for scene changes) those can be black and white.

Q: A two part question. 1) Is it alright if the cover art has minimal color? i can color but I have limited colors and I don't have those fancy software for coloring my art is all traditional media D:

2) would be ok If I got someone else to color it? or would that be a bad thing?
A: 1) We want the cover to be as eye catching as possible, so we'd prefer colors. Allyson is fine with their being minimal, it really depends on how the artwork looks in the end. I suggest you save a copy of the lineart, and then you color the original and post both.

2) Of course! It just means on the inside of the book it will say "Lineart by: (NAME) Colored by: (name)

RavynCrescent, saphiremomo and Illaria all do CG coloring. You can even post the lineart and tell the three of them to go at it, and whichever turns out best will be chosen.

Q: Just tell me, specifically, what are the prizes?
A: First place, meaning the best there is, gets 2 donation letters (sealed envelopes, collectibles, whatever you call them). ALL artwork submitted gets a change to be used in the Predator Turned Prey Manga by published author Ravyn Crescent and accomplished artist Allyson Boeckman.

Q: Why are you holding this contest?
A: Allyson is a very busy person... I thought it might lighten the load for her if we allowed some guest art for covers and back covers, then she'd just have to focus on the interior. Also, this gives other artists a great way to show off their work! They can get a copy of the manga chapter their artwork is in, and show everyone! Plus, everyone else who buys a copy gets to see who did what art!

Q: ... I heard rumors there was another reason you hold these art contests
A: twisted ... Yes, there is. On occasion, I hold these as job opportunities. A bunch of my fans were donating art wanting me to use it for my merchandise, so I decided 'hm... well, we can give some a shot'. If I really like a person's artwork, I'll contact them asking if I can use the art in my merchandise, or if they would like the chance at fame by donating some other art for it. You can PM me for more information! Genesistoy got hired as a merchandise artist by entering an art contest of mine! You can see her work in my show, she drew a full body of Hunter and Matsi.

Q: How many characters can be in the picture?
A: As many as you like.

Q: Can we put Original Characters into the picture?
A: No. This contest is for my Manga cover, ONLY my characters can be used.

Q: Can we put ourselves into the picture?
A: not this time.

Q: When is the contest over?
A: June 10th.

Q: Can I ask you questions about the novel?
A: Yes! smile

Q: Can I ask you questions about being published?
A: Sure.

Q: Will you edit my story?
A: Nope.

Q: Will you tell your agent about me?
A: I might...

Q: Will you read my story?
A: No.

A: No

Q: Why not!?
A: Because, sadly, I can't! sad I have had to turn down a lot of manuscripts from people and I DO feel bad about it, but my publishers, agent, editor(s) and... mom, have warned me that I am NOT to read unpublished manuscripts because a lot of young authors are being accused of copyright infringement. There have been a few cases where authors have been given manuscripts from fans and 3 things have happened.
1) They read the manuscript, and realized it was a lot like the story they were witting/had just written and either got angry.
2) They did not read the manuscript but their novel was similar and the fan accused them of stealing their idea
3) They stole the whole thing.
I refuse to get involved with any of that, I don't steal, so I don't read unpublished manuscripts... I will, however, tell you some steps on how to get your work published.

Q: What if I give you permission to use anything from my writing you want?
A: I don't steal. I want to be original, thus I don't take chances.

Q: I'll put it in writing!
A: Sorry...

Q: What if I just mail it to you anyway?
A: I'll wonder how you got my address... and if I receive mail that feels like a manuscript, or holds a disk, and it's from someone I don't know, I send it back before I even consider opening it.

Q: That isn't fair.
A: >_< There are a lot of places online where you can submit your work for it to be read... another author might read it!

Q: Isn't there ANY WAY we can post something for you to read?
A: I allow members to post SHORT stories and poetry on my forum, but there is no guaranteed way for you to get me to read it.

Q: I read your book, can I give you ideas on a possible sequel!?
A: NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Q: You're mean.
A: I'm crushed that you would say that.
