Greetings, earthlings!
I'm Naita, as you may have guessed from the banner above. I'm a bit of an admitted art whore, and after selling my panda hat recently, I came by funds for something I've wanted to do for quite a while- an art contest.

Not much to say, really, other than that I hope to have some fun, and hope others enjoy it too!

Dates of importance:

Title of piece: An Intimate Moment - Before the Masquerade

I wanted to create a piece that will capture the time/environment of The Manor's characters and settings. I want to give it the classic look and the feeling that we are, perhaps, still living a few centuries back in a fantasy world, where there were still kings, queens, and kingdoms to rule. I want us (the viewer) to feel the royalty, the weight of the dresses, er...hear the classic violin music?....Perhaps, all I really want for us (the viewer) is to be the young painter's eyes, capturing an intimate moment when Lady Naita Siri is preparing for the masquerade with the help of young Ceiba.

PS: The WIP link to the progression of this digital painting from scratch to finish, that is if anyone is intersted in how I painted this piece. I have a lot of mishaps on the compositions of this piece, it started out as a small piece but got a lot bigger. I didn't use any references for this painting, only Naita's blog about the characters so that I can get a feel for their personalities. I had a lot of fun playing around with the clothing style. As I pulled them from my head, I'm not how accurate they are with the actual clothings style in the past. I was trying to give this piece a 'classic painting' feel to it. One that seems like it was painted a few centuries ago and fit in with the environment of The Manor based on what I read. I hope you like it Naita.

Comments (optional): "Often did those blue and grey eyes meet." When I read that line I knew I had to do a picture of Lady Siri and Eshal. Envolving other events, such as Eshal's appointment to Royal guard, I decided the best situation for them to see each other would be at a ball - Lady Siri as a guest and Eshal as one of the guards on duty. And as such they wouldn't be able to speak to one another, all they can do is glance and share a brief connection with their eyes. Aww... tragic love! heart
A couple of other things I really enjoyed putting in to give the picture more story and detail - the red dress (which I think must be one of Lady Siri's favourtie colours since it's mentioned a couple of times in Naita's history). And being a masquerade, what better than a red squirrel motif? Complete with squirrel mask and acorn pendant. XD Eshal too, has put in the effort, buffing and polishing his armor (so much so that it reflects some of the other guest's silhouettes and the nearby wall sconce) in enthusiam of his first real 'guard duty' and also because he knows Lady Siri will be there. *wink*

Well, I suppose you want to know who to draw, huh?
Well, here are my darlings!

Lady Naita Siri

Age: Mid to late twenties.
Hair colour: Black, though often depicted with a purple tinge.
Eye colour: Grey.
Clothing: Largely as shown in references, though anything of the general style depicted works well, feel free to play around with dress style.

History:
Lady Siri, newly orphaned and thus left with the large Siri family fortune, was sent to The Manor as punishment for spurning the King's advances. It was rumoured she had fallen in love with one of the King's guards, but no proof ever stuck to the rumours that washed over Court.
Her entire childhood was spent in the lower parts of the Court, where she was taught the ways of a courtier by her mother, and distracted from these by her playmates Eshal and Erina. The two were siblings, both three years Naita's senior, hair golden as the sun, eyes blue as the sea on a calm day. Unfortunately, Erina died of pox before her twelfth birthday, and soon after it was deemed unseemly for a Duke's daughter to play with the son of a guard. Thus Eshal and the young Lady Siri were parted.
Making her entrance to society on the eve of her fifteenth birthday, Naita's long black hair, beautiful face, and clear grey eyes took the court by storm. By comparison, her pretty sister's success had been nothing, and the little Lady became used to attention being lavished upon her. Such went on until her eighteenth year, the time she was deemed marriageable. Her parents had high hopes, as many Dukes, Barons and the odd Faleth took to her. Even the old King seemed keen on the child, for he flirted with her a good deal. She accepted the attention with pride, but did not ignore the appointment of that same golden Eshal to Royal Guard the same year. Often did those blue and grey eyes meet.
It was around the time a prominent Faleth proposed that the King finally made a true advance, asking the astonished young woman up to his rooms. Disgusted that her father had turned down the marriage offer of the Faleth of Haler in favour of making his daughter mistress of an old man, Lady Siri refused to meet the King's demands, and in a huff was bustled away to The Manor.
In her time at the first Siri residence she has taken in a young seamstress, a few wards, and seen her sister married, with child, and disowned. Now, with the death of all but herself and her half-sister, how will she cope?

Linaia Linquas

Age: Late twenties to early thirties.
Hair colour: Light medium brown.

History:
Linaia's quiet, calm nature was blessed with kindness from childhood. The passing of her mother is barely a spec in Linaia's memory, as the Duchess was forever at court, and her wetnurse was by far the guiding force of her early years. When the younger half-siblings, Naita and Elsius, were born, Linaia took to mothering them, spoiling them until they, too, left to make their mark on court. Linaia, of course, had had her turn in the whirling, colourful world of political pacts and scandals, but her nature meant that she had by no means thrived, and retired to the country home of her father. A friendship from childhood took, on her return, the turn of romance, and though the course of true love never does run smooth, as the saying goes, the deprivations caused by her marriage and subsequent pregnancy are outweighed by her happiness.

Aelus Linquas

Age: Early thirties.

More tattoo-like, red, an unintelligable series of characters from elbow to wrist. Usually covered by clothing.

History:
Aelus' quiet charm is known to a very few. Reserved to a degree because of the reactions to his physical, well, ugliness, and further due to a fear of that which once passed, he will speak only when addressed, or where it appears he can do some good. Forever trying to make up for some remembered sin of the past, Aelus seeks to redeem himself. A series of scars on his left arm marks the bane of his existence, as though he does not remember a time without them, they still appear and feel raw and new. They take the form of symbols, foreign to the eye, and provide a great discomfort, often proving too painful for the man to weaken, unable to walk unaided for a spell, or indeed at all, at times. Linaia, his oldest friend, his truest love, consented to become his wife, and soon after it was shown they would be parents. The future seems infinitely more promising for the pale, gaunt Aelus than the past has proven itself.

History:
History of her people:
The Luna are a race older than the Sol, having first been formed by a single family that lived beyond the great mountains. The Luna family was nomadic, and before long picked up many stray people who loitered about the frozen lands.
Their evolution from large family to tribe occured in the wake of great turmoil, when the lands became too cold for their survival. They elected the first leader, Ghina, a woman of few years, but great mental capacity.
Ghina, realising that they could not survive in this increasingly barren land, ordered the great trek- to pass the mountains and find home in what lay beyond.

A great number died in this journey, and in the great mountains lies many an ancient graveyard to mark their loss.

When they reached the new lands, the intense greenery stunned this people, and they named it "Idwe"- meaning hope.
They set up their first village under the shadow of a tree greater than any other in the ancient forests, taller, more shapely, and almost pure white of trunk. They built their shelters out of wood from the outskirts of the clearing, centred around a pool of water that they felt was magical for it's reflection of the moon at any angle.

Many years passed in this way, bringing fortune and misfortune, plagues and births, until the tribe was in it's 30th generation in these lands- under the guidance of the dual leaders Adisi and Nuaro, mother and father to the first child in the village to display divine favour.
In this time, a great fire, the start of which no one could explain, ravaged the village, burning every house to the ground, killing many Luna, and eating at the great tree until nothing but two branches remained unblackened.
Nuaro, having been killed saving his own child from the fire, was the greatest mourned of the dead, and in his honour Adisi commissioned the building of the moon's shrine, to act as both an altar to their great mother, suspended over the clear waters, the only thing untouched by the fire, but also as a tomb to her beloved.
The other major results of this tragedy were the changed method of house building- they now built their houses on stilts, though the reason for this change seemed little to do with fire safety, and more for safety from the tribe that arrived shortly before the fire, and their constant minor attacks on the Luna. The last change was that instead of the tree they made gate posts from it's last two branches, carving into them all that had ever been of import.

Again, ages passed, a peace treaty ended the attacks from the Sol, though bickering went on, the plagues of the red moon halved the Luna's population, and a great eclipse marked the 60th generation's rise to power- the age of Wiralu and the Theos.

Her own history:
Taken in by Lady Siri when it became no longer feasible to live in the Luna village, Ceiba still holds great ties to her people, and returns often to visit her grandmother and other family members.
Quiet and far from sure of herself, she spends much of her time in the library of The Manor, more often than not avoiding Breena and the chaos that follows in her wake.

She delights in caring for Eydis, as well as Linaia and Aelus' young twins, but avoids the other child of the household, Breena, as if her life depended on it.

History:
Shy by nature, Eydis distrusts that which is new, and will continue to do so if given good reason for her feelings. She is, however, a warm child with those she trusts, entering into their play with zeal, and ever the sweetheart. Silent for a deal of time in new meetings, Eydis will not demand new friendships as some children do. She observes others, deciding whether or not they are deserving of her trust, before, like any child, giving way to the mirth of a new acquaintance. Her behaviour when there are none about, however, is most curious. She seems to have a self-possession only ever quietly implied, and in her times alone with her Daemon and, occasionally, her guardian, she can be playful, even silly. Frozen, her constant companion, appointed himself protector of the little girl, and if often found "protecting" her from any safe spot he can huddle himself into.

Breena

Age: Around 6-7, though you're welcome to draw her at older stages. (Some refs have her at her teen years. Anything with boobs= teen. xD)
Hair colour: Black
Eye colour: This is often done wrong. They are, in fact, a very, very dark purple, and appear almost black.
Clothing: As depicted in references, though anything in the style works.
For older ages- a sort of what I like to call "traditional meets sexual predator."

History:
Selfish to the point that she borders on what many would call 'pure evil,' Breena feels that the pleasure of others is an insult to herself. Thus, she takes pleasure in the misery of others, and cares for none outside what use they may have for her.

Though she is, technically, capable of caring for others, according to her decisions before the council, she chooses not to take this route, and her infantile delights are the pain of others, both physically and otherwise.

Her mind is well formed, and intelligence was a gift blessed to her early on. She is fully capable of testing others, and of disguising her true intent.
A skilled actress, she can charm those who have no particular gift for insight. Only those able to see through her glimmering facade will see the true Breena, and thus know to stay clear of any of her tests.

Patch of sunburn on bridge of nose.

History:
Samuel Larrenby, Sam to his friends, was born to upper-middle class parents in the town of Chorley, in the shire of Lancashire, northern England. His parents, Lydia and Gerald Larrenby, respectively, were muggles, living the usual life of two muggles very much in love. Gerald was a real estate agent, Lydia a former teacher now caring for her children at home. A loving, albeit occassionally rather absent, father, Gerald passed little to his son by way of genetic traits. Small of stature and rather portly, his his eleven year old son already threatens to outstrip his height before the year is out. That which he did pass on are his eyes, emerald and well set. His untamed mop of fair curls seems to be Sam's greatest fear of inheriting, for her swears it defies gravity late at night whilst no one is looking. Lydia, however, seemed determined to pass on her genetics, for her build, hair colour, and general even featured face are all practically mirrored in her son.

When Sam turned four, his parents told him they had a brilliant surprise for him, and before you could say "false advertising," a younger sister entered his life. Said demon child, Elizabeth, seems to have made it her mission in life to embarrass Sam, bringing out baby photos whenever his friends are round, telling girls he still wets the bed, (a lie, he stopped at age five) and other such wonderful things. However, woe betide, Sam was informed at age six that no adoption agencies accepted donations from young boys.

Knowing nothing of magic until his acceptance at Hogwarts, Sam spent the first two days of summer absorbing everything he could from the textbooks his parents proudly presented to him, before growing tired of the words and deciding that perhaps some practice at Hogwarts would prove more beneficial to his rather full mind.
Having said this, it must be noted that the boy does have a rather high IQ, resting a few points before genius level. It must also be mentioned that he is not brilliant at applying himself, and thus most homework lies half-finished until the night before it is due.

Very keen to get started at Hogwarts, not least of which to escape Elizabeth, Sam is however apprehensive of such a change- what if the other children dislike him? What if he steps in something horrid before being sorted? What if it turned out it was all a mistake and he were sent home?
These questions aside, he is excited, I swear!

Like most children, Sam's future plans consist of stardom and riches. Or happiness, but the first does sound rather attractive.
At age eleven, he has no clue what he wants to do later in life, and just hopes it comes with a manual, to be perfectly honest. One major goal he has, however, is to learn how to make things float in the air for as long as he pleases, Elizabeth has some payback due.

Although living with his parents, Sam's correspondence with his "Aunt Naita" borders on that of a family tie, she having been his babysitter before moving back to Gaia.
He has promised her to spend at least part of his first summer at her home in Gaia, excited at the prospect of late nights and jokes with his old friend.

Naita

Age: Early 20s.
Hair colour: Anything from dark red to black works, here. It's forever changing. xD

Tatoos: Tattoo of a mask on her stomach.

History:
Naita, as she is now known, grew up with her mother and three brothers in the Catalan village, Marseilles, southern France. Early in her life she developed a keen interest in the sea, and expressed a wish to sail. Obviously, it was not the done thing for women to become sailors, and so at the age of twelve, the cheeky child stowed away on the next ship to leave port, a tiny vessel named the "Ailing Albatross." And the name was the least of it's problems. Having dressed herself in her youngest brother's clothing, Naita pleaded for a job once found. In return for bread and water, she promised she would be a cabin boy, and hoped to learn the trade. The captain, a rather frugal old boy, agreed to this, and such a career on the high seas seemed imminent! And perhaps that career would have been successful, had Naita an ounce of talent for sailing, but alas, she was hopeless. She did, however, show a great knack for sewing the sails, and this kept her fed and housed. One fine day, whilst sailing in territories unknown, (though territories unknown to Naita were generally anything more than a metre from her person) the cabin "boy" came by rather a bad accident. Namely, she stood in the way of the mast, and received her reward full to the back of the head. As you can imagine, the skull of a human versus the mast of a ship is a rather easy battle to predict the outcome of, and the girl hit the water with an almighty splash. She washed up, some time later, cold and bedraggled, on the shore of Port Gino. There she spent several hours comatose on the sand. Incidently, the crew of the Ailing Albatross henceforth went bankrupt due to the cost of a new mainsail. As the hours ticked by, the usual parade of people made their way by the passed out teen, a few stopping to gawk, one over-zealous young child poking her with a stick, and none helping. At length, a pale woman in a red velveteen gown drew to a halt, eyeing the damp figure with a mixture of curiosity and dread. Shaking the girl by her shoulders, the well dressed young lady called out to her a few times, recognising by the rise and fall of the chest that the child before her was in fact alive. "My dear, are you alright?" she called, as the fluttering eyelashes and muffled groans announced her patient's success in being brought round. "Where am I?" came the voice of the lost little sailor, quickly followed by, "Who the hell are you?" To this exceedingly tactful greeting, the lady simply smiled politely and nodded. "I am Lady Naita Siri, and yourself?" Quickly realising she had no answer for this, the sailor's silence spoke for her loss of memory, and with a sympathetic nature, Lady Siri had little choice but to take the girl in. Before long, the girl's talent for sewing was noted, and she was hired as a dressmaker for the household, with a decent wage, free food, and board. All in all, it was a good life, until her craving for something unknown led her to count her wages, and venture into the world. This was not to say that she was ungrateful, however. Spending a portion of her savings on a brilliant red swathe of silk, the former sailor created one last, magnificent gown for the lady of the house before resigning. As a final mark of respect, she took on the name Naita, that any success she may achieve should always be connected to her kind rescuer. Many adventures marked her departure from Port Gino, and amongst her travels were the countries of England, where the Larrenby's intruded upon her notice (quite literally, Lydia walked in on her in the bathroom), France (though not, alas, to Marseilles, where her true identity could have been restored), where it is thought her fear of sock puppets was cultivated, and Australia. After wandering over many a continent, she longed for the comforts of a home of her own, and settled upon Gaia, as close to Port Gino as possible. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Age: Mid twenties.
Hair colour: Black with white streaks.
Hair style: If hood is down: Either straight, as shown, or curled in ringlets.
If hood is up: Worn in side plait, near to bottom wrapped in white ribbon, ends curled.
This can also be shown with the hood down, if it is to be presumed she wore it up previously.
Eye colour: Green.
Clothing (if worn): Top: Black, tight, though with a hood large enough to mask her face should she wear it up.
Should reach the lower ribcage, before a pair of leather straps criss-cross and meet in the back.
Jeans: should be skintight.
Shoes: black boots.
Distinguising features: Freckles across nose.
Jewellery: Gold bracelet of a snake eating it's tail.
Tatoos: Tattoo of a pair of mechanical wings on her back, across shoulderblades.

History:
Have you ever questioned the matter of death? What is it, you may ask?
A soul? An entity? A singular pain?
No, say I. A business.

Death and Sons Incorporated is a shadowy business, but a business nonetheless, though on their tax forms they choose not to go too deeply into just what it is they do.
Endia is a temporary reaper, and not too successful at her job. See, the problem is, she doesn't get the fun cases. Some get the messy jobs, some the sad cases, some the real sob stories. Endia? She gets the old folks.
Whenever it is she drags her arse into work, she has to spend hours convincing incontinent old folk that just aren't quite ready to go. They need that last sponge bath, that last cup of tea, hell, in one old chap's case, one last kiss. Bless 'im.

In her spare time, she's a nudist. No, not the naturalist hippy kind, the "I just like flashing it around," kind.
She drinks, she flashes, and she breaks the ultimate bad news to old men and women. Not that I'm saying she's an oddity, but this is one girl that you might not want to take home to mum.

Vesilli Raiment

Age: Early twenties.
Hair colour: Red-brown

Slightly childish features.

History:
In a city, high above the reach of many, hidden in the Mountains of Argan, there are three towers, each built long ago by a single family.
From these families sprang civilisations, drawing new members from the flourishing city below.
They were the green, blue and red towers, owned by the Raiment, Oulec and Gittry families, passed down to an heir from each new generation.
Those of the green prized ingenuity, the ability to invent.
Those of the blue prized knowledge, and held a great library.
Those of the red prized beauty and wealth, and it was their wealth which supported the other two, via trade.
Each civilisation needed the other two, but war broke out over which prize was most valuable, ingenuity, knowledge, or that almighty wealth. Each civilisation felt they were greatest, that they, alone, should rule the city below.
Alone, each tower was powerless, but refused to seek a truce with the other two. As a result, the inhabitants of the towers returned to the lower citadel, leaving the proud families to die in the ruins of their own making.
Eventually, only a single child remained from each family, Vesilli Raiment, Remy Oulec and Meriot Gittry. They at last formed the necessary truce, but children, able to see their fathers' mistakes.
Now, they must rebuild the crumbling towers and fill them once more with the noble inventors, learned, and beautious city-dwellers, and achieve the dreams that once sustained their ancestors.

Sole heir of the red tower, Vesilli is never without her pet, a panther given to her as a cub by her father. It, like herself, is now a teen, and usually wound around her legs.
As a child, Vesilli was close to her father, and he indulged her with many gifts, the most beloved a diamond-studded mask and her beloved pet, Marilus.
Though tending towards vanity, she is committed to rebuilding the city, and it has been speculated she and Remy will marry.
