Oh, I saw that recently! It was a little weird, but had its charm.

I saw it right when I was around 4, and some of the images just never left (like Labyrinth; no idea how THAT one got past my mom's radar! razz ). I remember thinking that Amalthea was the prettiest girl I'd ever seen in a cartoon. X3

How different is the book from the movie? Or the movie from the book, I should say.

It's actually pretty darn close. There's a bit more dialogue of course, being a book and therefore not having a time limit, but for the most part it goes right along the same path. I think the biggest difference was that instead of going directly to the castle, the heroes stopped at a village first, and that's where they heard about the king's curse and the story of his son, who apparently came from that village.
It even has the scene with the tree, except Schmendrick tries to tell it that he's already engaged to another tree. XD

I love how brazen some of those cartoons were back then; nowadays they'd get into so much trouble for giving boobs to a tree. XD
