Death Note isn't overrated. It's really good, that's why everyone likes it. It's full of suspense until the end too.

I was really into TriGun, although it's mostly humor and weapons. It's rather old now too, I believe.

Another good, gorier one is Deadman Wonderland. I'm not sure if it's still continuning but the series is relatively new and it's a must if you're a gore fan. 3nodding

Higurashi no naku koro ni and Umineko no naku koro ni both have a lot of gore. Puella Magi Madoka Magica is good too. It's not really gory but it is really creepy at some parts.

Though saying your watching Afro Samurai but won't watch other hyped anime tells me you are kind of a hypocrit.
I suggest Fate Stay Night,Fate Zero,Saint Seiya and the Lost Canvas.

Yeah, if you wanna have a good cry. "Barefoot Gen", but that has a happy(ish) ending. Ya know, in the same way "Alas, Babylon" has a good ending compared to "The Day After".

Daring and ballsy anime: "Paranoia Agent", "AKIRA" (official title is all caps), "5 Centimeters Per Second" (even if it doesn't seem like it after the first act, keep watching!), "The Astonishing Works of Tezuka Osamu", if you're willing to read with your eyes, then I HIGHLY recommend finding Yoshihiro Tatsumi's "Abandon the Old in Tokyo",

Anime that doesn't immediately seem like anything special BUT TOTALLY IS: "Neon Genesis (********) Evangelion", "Darker than Black" (my favorite of all time), "Baccano!", and probably one of my favorite movies of all time, "The Girl Who Leaped Through Time", and while I personally don't like it, everyone else who has watched it ******** loves it, so I'll slap "Eden of the East" on here.
