Myself, I prefer subs, although every now and again a good dub comes out, but overall I prefer subs.

OMG Gaia, I'm a huge Emma Frost fan! Please give me a good Emma Frost 1x1 roleplay and you'll be loved forever.

It doesn't really matter to me, since Dubbing has improved IMMENSELY since I started watching anime. I still watch Subs to start off with from habit, but it isn't strictly necessary like it used to be.

Both, but I like watching anime in Japanese more.

But anyway, it greatly surprised me that the dubbed voice of Sasuke, Yuri Lowenthal, actually prefers subs over dubs.

Being that I prefer to watch the subs over the dubs, it’s hard to come down on the pro-sub/anti-dub community. On the other hand, this is my work, and I know how much love and care we put into creating the best, most engaging dub possible while still respecting the original Japanese. Luckily, I’ve seen a lot of people who were originally against the CN dub become quite fond of it. Some people will always have gripes with the dub, that’s fine. Some people prefer to hear the original Japanese. Fine. I’m one of those people. And some people just want to remind you that they were there first, before the dub, and that means they’re cooler than people who just learned about it. That’s okay, I’m one of those people too, sometimes… In a show and that’s fine by me.”

That does not surprise me one bit. I'm surprised he even bothers watching subs since he's multi lingual and speaks fluent Japanese.

I'm fine with both

Why are fansubs better then official subs?

For several reasons actually:

1- Fan subs are aimed towards and made by the hardcore typically. So they give more of a literal translation and being that I have studies Japanese for a number of years I know enough to tell if the subs are inaccurate. Where as commercially done subs tend to generalize the translation, often completely changing what is being said.

2- A lot of anime relies on the audience knowing Japanese culture and understanding the meaning behind the things being said or done, like a joke that a foreigner wouldn't understand the context to. Where a commercial sub would just reword it to make it make sense to an American audience, a "good" fan sub will include tidbits of information explaining the situation or culture behind it.

3- Commercially done subs are made with the focus on pumping out as much crap as fast as they can to make more money. Fan subs are made by true fans that care about quality and aren't making any money, they do it for the pure fun and reward of being able to help to distribute to fellow fans of anime.

I suggest looking into fan subs if you never have before, watching well done fan subs is so much more rewarding. Support the people that truly love anime and wish to provide it to you.

If you don't like to watch subs because you hate to read then your lazy. I think everything should be enjoyed in its native language at least once, so as to truly appreciate it. And know that not all things translate so easily, like an inside joke, you are missing out on a huge portion of the experience.

I prefer both but as I heard someone say would you rather read a anime or would you prefer to watch it... ?? I would want to watch it. Not that I don't like Fan Subs or Subs there are some anime I prefer to watch with out the subtitles.

Most fan subs I have seem are pretty shoddy. They are quickly made and poorly translated. They tend to add curse words instead of fully translating something and tend to clutter up the screne. Fan subs tend to rely more on fancy text to stand out rather then a decent translation.

Fan subs tend to be made quickly because fans want the shows as fast as possible so fansubbers pump them out as quickly as they can and ignore quality. Of the shows I have seen 9 times out of ten the official sub is far better then the fan sub which tends to be crap.

The reason for this is simple all good fansubbers get hired by companies like Viz and FUni and start working for them while only the bad fansubbers remain later on.

Oh and very few people who prefer dubs prefer them because they are too lazy to read. I prefer dubs because I prefer to watch things in my own language. I hate the idea of reading Tv because TV shows are not meant to be read. Books are meant to be read, comics are meant to be read. To me the idea of reading a TV show is just wrong. I will never listen to a book on tape so why should I read a Tv show?

Oh and I am not "too lazy to read." I read novels, at least one a week two if it's an easy writer.

Every anime I own on DVD I have seen dubbed and subbed and three fourths of those shows I have also watched fan subs of. And not just one fansub ether. because shows can have up to eight different fansubs I tend to watch three or four to compare them.

Thats the biggest problem with fansubs, because they don't have access to the official script they have to rely on the translation skills of the people working on it. They could be people who took one college Japanese course for all you know.

In conclusion.
Quality wise Official subs are almost always better then fansubs from what i have seen. Fan subs tend to be untrust worthy.

No sig at the moment.

Creativerealms, please don't reply as if I were attacking you, I was only expressing my opinion. I m sorry for your poor experience with fan subs, I have had a more positive experience but that's me. And many people think too literally about reading subs, if you do it often as i do you forget you are reading, i never notice it anymore, i pretty much just watch the anime as normal and listen to the voices but almost subconsciously read it so i understand what is being said. But again that is me and my experience. I do like some dubs as i have said before, but i usually prefer the voices of the Japanese voice actors especially if i get used to their Japanese voices. Some English voice counterparts drive me crazy. Death note, terrible in English, Evengelion, horrible in English as well as many others, and on the same token some do actually suck in Japanese as well. In the end its whatever you prefer everyone is different, hence the topic subject.

i think some animes are pretty good in dubs ^_^ but i like watch'n most animes in subs just cuz the originals just sounds hella lot better lol X3

nyaah~>w< i heart L-kun! X3
For me, it depends on my watching conditions. I tend to like subs because the acting is far more natural, and the sound is properly mixed with dialogue as king at a level above the other sounds (dubbing sound mixers should do this, but there are times when the dubbed dialogue gets buried by the music or other sounds. Of course, mixers are on a tight schedule, and with dubs, I assume they're only working with the stems - in other words, they don't have all the sounds to work with, the sound effects and music have already been mixed and they just have to mix in the dialogue, but if the Japanese actor raised their voice at some point, and the English actor kept it quiet, and the traffic sounds in the background were a bit louder to stay with the Japanese actor's version, the mixer of the dub cannot single out that traffic noise to lower it, since it has been married to all other sounds apart from dialogue. The only thing to do would be to bring up the dialogue, but that may not sound natural... and so it gets buried).

Back to watching conditions, if I'm eating and watching an anime, dubs are actually easier, since I can look away from the screen and at my food every once in a while, and not miss any conversation. I like it best when the ADR editors for the dub match the dialogue to the mouth movements. It's really distracting when there are mouth movements that don't go with the sounds, like extra movements or not enough movements, or something that clearly looks like an "O" but is being played off as an "Eee" (but that's more of a translation issue).

If you have studied Japanese for a number of years, shouldn't you be able to watch anime in Japanese without any subtitles at all?

I rarely EVER watch anything with subtitles. I'm a strict dub-only girl.

Art Evolution- It's a beautiful thing

The AMC's Resident X Fan. Challenged and Defended- 3 Times
And now, #2 Jizabel fan.

I say subs.
=]
Mainly because I just watched the three Death Note live films, and they were all subbed.
Not too bad.
