I'll just focus on the three main timelines.

Universal Century: 4 (average)

Even though I have suffered the misfortune of never seeing anything pertaining to the Universal Century, I agree with the popular consensus that the original Mobile Suit Gundam and its associated spinoffs are for the most part quality programming. G-Saviour is the only bad apple in an otherwise perfect bunch, but we know it doesn't count.

After Colony: 3

I remember watching Gundam Wing when it was still airing on Cartoon Network. I wasn't that impressed with it, and listening to other people's opinions of it over the years has really coloured my initially neutral assessment of it. I should watch it over again and decide on an opinion already; perhaps I've been giving it way too little credit.

Cosmic Era: 3.5

Gundam SEED was basically the same thing as Gundam Wing, but in reverse; instead of growing to hate it, I actually enjoyed it a lot. It's not as good as the original Mobile Suit Gundam, granted, and there are countless issues with it on various fronts, but I still regard it as somewhat of a (severely) flawed masterpiece. I haven't gotten around to actually watching Gundam SEED Destiny, so I'm not gonna touch it for now.

I enjoyed seed for the first half but then it got way to dramatic. And by the end it had ripped off to many of the old gundams. Destiny took that drama and rip off, and took it to the next level. With more whining brats in war machines, that leave people to die in a disabled mobile suit rather than killing them.
I like Gundam Wing a lot.

I think it's the characters that do me in. There's just something about that mismatched little gang of mecha pilots. xd

yeah i thought so too
i like Gundam wing as well because the main pilots are like a combination of the past Gundams pilots. In some of the ep it really shows.

But after all other gundam shows really didnt seem up to par as gundam wing.
Especially the cell-shaded one that was for kids
Gundam Wing is my favorite of the Gundam series I've seen. It may be partly because it was one of the first anime series I ever saw and I loved the characters. I thought the story was sort of weak in some areas, but I thought that the character development made up for it.
The only other Gundam series I've seen are G Gundam, 08th MS Team, and Mobile Suit Gundam. Though, I've only seen parts of each, I didn't like the original MS Gundam because it felt like a chore to watch. G Gundam I only ever saw about 4 episodes, so I had no clue what was going on at times... and 08th MS Team I enjoyed, even though I only saw the second half of the series.

And you call your self a gundam pilot.
I think I enjoyed Wing so much because it was totally different from all the anime I was watching at the time (middle school). The characters were all so flawed and bizarre-- nothing like the main characters of other televised anime. It was really interesting to see the interactions of a group of kids who had essentially been turned into a bunch of unbalanced killing machines.

King_Jing, I understand what you mean about the lack of a strong antagonist, but I actually prefer it that way-- almost all of the characters do horrible things at some point, making it much less black and white. I still take issue with all of the pilots when I watch, and I enjoy that.
Of course, I always place characters over plot in importance; so, where the lack of a clear antagonist hurts the plot, I feel that it strengthens the characters, since each has to take on some negative traits to compensate. I prefer it this way, really. 3nodding

I've always liked fake military stuff, too, so Wing has held my interest longer than the other anime I used to watch, in the same way that I prefer, say, Final Fantasy Tactics to the mainstream FF games.

Unfortunately, I've never seen any other Gundam series, with the exception of one episode each of Destiny and 08th MS Team.

I would love to check out the stuff in the Universal Century if it's that good, to say nothing of the others. Are all these series available on the American market now, or does it require importing/buying bootlegs/BT and a benevolent seeder?

Mostly everything from U.C except ZZ and Victory gundam can be found in America.

Awesome. Thanks.
i just love U.C. that was when all the people went up into colonies to avoid earth, and one called themselvs Zeon right? then that spawned all the really good series.

i doubt it. The best is probaly Amaro Ray, the first new type. He jumped in the gundam and gave the instructions a glance and could pilot the gundam. And Lt. Amaro designed the Nu Gundam.
