I know, but people are so mean.

rofl

your kidding, this may sound mean but if your going to let this get to you than the manga companies wont even except you because of this. you have to be stong and independent. >:C

my formula "no winey, no manga"
So true. D:

Not.
Who said you can't? Although the real question is why would you want to be one in the fist place.
Mugetsu Ookamiza
manga is just the Japanese word for comic book, so it doesn't matter if you call yourself a mangaka or a comicker it's the same thing.
Mugetsu Ookamiza
people are mean because, a, people are assholes, and b, manga fans are sick of wannabe "manga-ka" who aren't even Japanese trying to foist cliche crap on them that they obviously spent the most effort on trying to make it look "Japanese" or "manga-like" and thus didn't put nearly enough effort into the plot, characters, or creating their own art style. there's also comic fans who are sick of the "manga kiddies" acting as if comics aren't good enough for them when some comics are actually superior to some manga..

In all seriousness there are a few aesthetic things that most western artist haven't figured out. Or don't pay attention to.

I've seen some LOVELY comics out there. heck, one of the main comics I read early on was classic ElfQuest. compared to that some manga artwork is terrible. even some manga art that looks good at first glance is even worse because some manga artists use flashy styles to hide the fact all their characters look almost exactly the same. give me Hellboy over some of that stuff, since at least I can tell who is who (and the story is damn good, more coherent than some manga plotlines I've seen).

I'm talking about manga elements that western manga artists don't do or notice. I read a hell of a lot of western comics. I tend to even like western made comics because the story telling is better.
But it all comes back to what you like and don't like.

and to what sells better in a given part of the world than others. Japanese created manga tends to follow aesthetics that sell well in Japan; Western made comics follow aesthetics that are different from Japanese ones but sell better where they're made.

How about you just become a graphic novel artist, or a comic book artist. It means the same s**t anyways. Do you really have to be a manga-ka? neutral

Seconded. Besides, when your stuff gets exported to Japan, they'll call it manga and you a mangaka. Wish granted. Next?

How about you make your own graphic novel/comic book in America?
It is practically the same thing, minus the Japanese thing.

Actually.... you CAN. But it´s very very difficult.
Here is some information about how to become one.
Why not write manga in America?

Because, really, that would be a lot easier than trying to make it in Japan. To work for someone in Japan, you have to be fluent AND an amazing artist/writer.

“Protecting and all that isn’t really a big deal. And because it’s not a big deal, I know I definitely won’t regret iiit~
Besides… the bonds between people aren’t something that can be cut so easilyyy~
It’s shapeless, just like air, so even if you wanted to cut it, it can’t be cut…"

Personally I think "Graphic Novelist" sounds much better than "Mangaka."

Because they have form, my scissors can damage them so, so easily.
This makes me sad and happy.”

True. Actually, before trying to become a mangaka in Japan it´s best to publish in your own country first. Why? Because it will be one of the first questions any publisher from another country will ask you - why not publish in your own country? I talked to some Japanese and other foreign publishers and it was one of the first things they always told me. (Though after telling them I already did we moved over to the issue of language and why not to stay with your homecountry publisher.... XD)
How about you do what you like instead of telling people what you are going to be/giving a crap about their opinion?
does it matter?

There's a lot of English Manga-ka in japan helping artists and writers now. It's how there able to translate a lot of words in to English for some manga
