The most thought provoking anime you've watched

Have you ever watched a show and stayed up all night trying to figure out what it was trying to say or what it meant to you? Recently I watched End of Evangelion and Perfect Blue. Both are psychological and do an amazing job at getting inside your head. They raise questions about humanity, selfishness, the after life, reality, and many more topics to get the brain cells going.

So what anime make you ponder? It could be a show or movie.

Everyone seems to have mentioned the ones that first came to mind (Serial Experiments Lain, From the New World, Kino's Journey, and Revolutionary Girl Utena).

I would add Now and Then, Here and There to the list. It really made me ponder war, child soldiers, the realities of people who suffer under a dictator, etc.

I ended up watching the whole series again after that plot twist there.
Makes you think about the value we place on non-human life, let alone what it even means to be human.
