So we all love anime and manga, and some of us love it enough that we try and make our own! I was curious what most people's stances on Fanime is. I've heard a lot about how it's too much work and no one ever finishes an episode and all that and I guess my question is:

Does anyone watch fanime, want to make a fanime, has made a fanime?

What are your thoughts on the subject as a whole?

On Youtube there are some well-known ones already including My Jungle Book Your Year and the Nyan Nyan Sugar Girls and others.

There is this new one: Magical Fun Time Now which has it's episode 1 up, just posted today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wfbw-c3bhew. Does anyone think the quality of these (possible) parodies are getting better with time? Will it become more viable in the future?

I'd love to know what other people think of fanime! So please let me know!

So it seems to me that opinions are actually pretty divided. Some people only like things made in flash (and yes since it's an actual animating tool a person can get really good with it) and other things made by a team of people who are trying to go professional and focus more on shorts and such to improve their skills build up a portfolio and get a job in the industry.

I think it's a lot harder for high schoolers and others who discover anime, have some ideas, and want to make their own with very little know-how or tools. Most fanime is made in MS paint and uses Windows Movie Maker, and I think there is a limit on how short the images can be (I don't think it goes as low as .1 seconds for example).

It seems the popular fanime tend to be pariodies, or that the 'good' ones that people really like tend to be made by a team of people with some skills and necessary tools (Gainax when they were just entering contests at conventions, Maikaze which is a studio, etc). So I guess the important thing isn't so much the medium but whether the story presented can carry it, although mediocre tools and art can certaintly drag down an otherwise wonderful story.

I think the reason that VampireMew and NyanNyan and JungleBook and the others are so well-liked despite having little artistic skill is primarily due to the fact that they are very well done as parodies. However with a certain level of effort maybe it'd be possible for someone to do a serious story using these methods too.

I don't know, I can't say for sure, I'd really like to know what other people think of this though. Again if anyone has any thoughts at all on the topic of fanime (fanmade anime) please let me know!

Thanks!

Sorry, that's 'fanime' as in 'fan-made anime'.

Thats great! I'm really glad you think so! So would you say that fanime is potentially a viable medium to tell visual stories like anime?

If it's good enough, I guess it's ok...
I'd rather make fanfics though, I'm horrible at fan art, and I'd probably fail at fanime

a majority of Fanime are terrible
not even bad, just legitimately terrible
if the art isn't bad, the animation is
the animation isn't bad, it's the art
i have yet to see a serious, legitimate fanime with good animation
parodies though, yeah, two
such as Vampire Mewpoccolypse- http://youtu.be/On9OOq1dvR0 in which the animation style chances in episode 2
and Girl-Chan in Paradise because hell, egoraptor is a really great animator

as for the one you posted, crude art against stock images is literally the funniest thing, but they way it's done makes it look less like a parody, more like someone actually trying to make a legitimate fanime
unless they are
then whoops

Are fanime's cartoons made by fans of pre-existing material created by another person, or are they original works inspired by anime? Because I do have an idea to create an anime-like cartoon that uses generic anime style, but it's an original work.
Nyan Neko Sugar Girls is the only good fanime.

I wouldn't exactly call Girlchan in Paradise a "fanime" though... But yeah, I love me some Girlchan.
I haven't found any Fanime that I particularly liked however I know there are-people who would potentially be good at it however sadly a majority of those people use them for music videos or extremely short sample clips and that's about it from what I've seen.

That was made by Japanese anime fans in 1981, then they became famous and became Gainax.
Before the guys at Gainax became big, they were amateur, and almost nobody, like me and you.
A time when VHS was awesome and internet wasn't as good as today.

Their amateur work makes yours look like........well at least draw something that can appeal to my eyes.

OH and almost forgot. if you watch anime like Genshiken, Lucky Star, Otaku No Video, or any anime that shows the main character(S) going to a convention, you'll notice that conventions in Japan promotes amateur artist, and a lot of anime/manga fans go to these convention to check out underground and rising artist. A reason why people at Gainax tried hard.

Their Daicon 4 opening is when they starting getting support and money but the daicon 3 opening is when they were creating an animated opening from scratch.

So I guess the resounding opinion here is that fanime is no good and this one is no different. Shame. They did post episode 2 today.
