Lately I've been preferring dubs, and I'm not sure why. It was sudden. To be honest, I enjoy FUNi's dubs. (Most of the time, anyway.)

But the Japanese VAs are talented, too. Especially Mitsuki Saiga.

I have to agree with you.
Honestly, I think it depends on the dub. If you think about it, most of the people woh say "DUBS SUCK!" have most likely heard the Japanese version first.

umm.... everything. they dont talk like people usually would, they talk like 2 times slower.

The only animated show I have ever seen where people talk like that was Thundercats and thats an American cartoon.

well everything ive watched is like that. like naruto and bleach. where the scene is just a fixed point and the people are talking its soooooo long. but thats what i think.

Did you watch the subbed version in comparison to the dubbed?

yep, i only watch subs, i was trying to find desert punk once and all i could find was dubbed so i watched it, kinda hated it.

It all depends on the voice-acting. Both the Japanese and English has its share of bad voice-acting. There are anime where I prefer the Japanese to the English, and anime where I prefer English to Japanese.

I think most sub-purists turned to subs in the first place because of the bad dub exposures they've gotten from horribly dubbed anime such as Cardcaptors (I know that turned me away from dubs for a while before I discovered good dubs like Fullmetal Alchemist) and Mew Mew Power.

I don't like either the Naruto sub or the dub. The voices in both versions are just annoying to me. The only voice I liked was Kakashi's.

I feel your frustration and I applaud you for making this topic.

I'll actually take an English dub over subtitles anyday because honestly I feel that subtitles aren't fair to the animators. Hayao Miyazaki even said himself in an interview that he prefers that people watch his animated films in whatever their native lanugage is. He and alot of another animators that I've reseached all feel that subtitles severly take away from the experience. They want their audience to be able to immerse themselves in the characters and storyline, every little detail counts and subtitles take away from that. I even remember reading once that Disney actually dissaproves of subtitled version of their animated films because they don't want thier audience to be distracted by reading.

With this being said I'm not saying that watching anime in Japanese w/ subs is wrong. You can watch whatever you want in whatever format you prefer. But I am tired of people insisting that Jap w/ subs is the one and only right way, because ultimately it's NOT! Try this, Japanese with NO SUBTITLES! razz

I don't care what others say, if you watch anime in Japanese with English subs you aren't REALLY enjoying it in Japanese. You aren't able to understand what is being said without the subtitles there to tell you. It doesn't matter what audio you're listening to. You are still reading the ENGLISH SUBS therefore your mind is processing it in ENGLISH. Even though you are hearing Japanese your mind automatically blocks it out because your brain cannot read and intently listen at the same time.

I've tried watching anime in Japanese with no subtitles before. But because I'm only in Japanese 1, I could only understand 10% of what was being said throughout an episode.

I can watch an anime and listen to what the audio says even while reading the subtitles. In an episode of the J-drama Hana Yori Dango when Rui and Tsukushi were out on the fire escape, when Rui asked if Tsukushi wanted to see Shizuka again, I heard every word of what he said. "Shizuka ni mouichido aitai?" (Do you want to see Shizuka again?) A lot of the phrases in Hana Yori Dango were familiar to me, because we covered those phrases in my Japanese 1 class, or they were easy to pick out (joshi no ten janai yo). Sometimes I didn't even need to look down at the subtitles because the phrasing was all too familiar to me and I could understand it without the use of subtitles.

I'm also bilingual (Vietnamese is my native language, English is my second language), so it isn't hard for my mind to process two languages at once at the same time.

Dubs should NOT contain the English VAs using Japanese suffixes on names. Chan, san, kun, dono, sensei, etc ALL need to stay out of English dubs. D:

But wouldn't it weird to hear something like, for example, "Mr. Kakashi" instead of "Kakashi-sensei"? In martial arts classes such as aikido, judo, and jiujitsu, all students are expected to call their teachers "sensei" instead of "Mr. _______."
