I don't feel that all dubs are bad, but I do tend to not enjoy most of them. There are some English dubs that I prefer over Japanese+subs, but those aren't as common as I would like for them to be (because, quite frankly, I really would like to enjoy dubs).

What I notice though is that, a lot of the time, English dubs aren't really... dubs, necessarily. When a Japanese script is taken, translated, and then completely and utterly ripped apart (edited) so that significant chunks of dialog are made "Westerner-friendly," I don't consider that series a dub anymore. For me, series like that are just "FUNimation/4Kids/Viz/etc originals" that use a successful Japanese franchise to boost sales. Prime examples of this would be Yu-Gi-Oh! (YGO! Duel Monsters was horribly edited from its original form in order to be kid-friendly) by 4Kids and, to a more extreme level, the upcoming SGT FROG by FUNimation (the test episode they've released is a COMPLETE rewrite of the original episode). For me, a proper "dub" is one that takes a script, translates it, and then has the VA staff do the voices for it.

I like both subs and dubs.

Though I'll admit a large number of dubs released recently have really pissed me off. Dubs are great... when they're done correctly. When the company actually goes out of its way to find suitable voice actors as well as translate in a way that doesn't chop the plot all to hell.

Really, Wolf's Rain, Trigun, and FMA are some of the greatest dubs I've ever watched.

...Digimon and Ouran are two of the worst. (Though I'll admit Ouran just pisses me off because I hate Vic and can't stand it when characters use "chan" and "senpai" when speaking english.) Digimon was just plain awful. They tore the plot and characters all to hell. neutral

And for extra lols: I don't think 4kids was as awful as everyone made them out to be. I preffered them to whoever's doing Pokemon, now. Though I'll admit I hate their Yu-Gi-Oh.

Thank god Disney actually gave a crap about Miyazaki's films and gave every character the right voice actor for the job.

I had to vote, "I don't care as long as I get my anime."
Even if the dub is bad, I usually get absorbed enough in the show to ignore the voice acting. Or I'll laugh at it. But never flip out and rant about it.

The funniest dubs I ever heard were in the video game Shenmue. (I don't think I spelled that right) It was on the Dreamcast, then moved to the Xbox. Sorry, I'm not that familiar with bad anime dubs. Most people say 4Kids' One Piece, but I think those were mostly editing and censoring issues right?

Funimation is all about pleasing the fans.

I appreciate the effort Funi puts in but..........they should take a good look at who their fans actually are.

Most of the time, I'm neutral when it comes to dubs, but the only dub I actually hate is the dub for Tokyo Mew Mew (Mew Mew Power).

Agreed, the Tokyo Mew Mew dub just sucked. There was really no reason to change the names of the characters.

But honestly that has been the only dub that I hated. All the others that I have seen were great in my opinion.

People say that American dubbing companies reuse the same voice actors, which is true, but I personally think that majority of the Japanese voice actors all sound the same as well.

I watch subbed anime so I can watch the anime early on then wait for it to come over here and get dubbed. Naruto Shippuden being a fine example.

I agree with you, and I'm really starting to hate people who hate
dubs or think lowly of people who like them.

People shut up, it mouth flaps were originally made for another language, and they aren't that detailed anyway. Mouth flaps are like that of a ventriloquist dummy, they just go up and down. As long as voices start and stop with the mouth, no one should have any complaints.

I've never understood how anyone who doesn't have Japanese as their first language can even say this. I'm not deaf to bad voices, but they aren't as bad as people say. If you can't watch an anime RAW, than you shouldn't be allowed diss the voices of your own language. To me, all the voices in Japanese sound the same for the most part. As long as a voice sounds like the age and gender of whoever than it's usually good. (Sometimes adding accents is good)

Cry me a river, some things just don't sound right in English translated exactly word for word.
Things like "That was my line" "[Person]-sama" (usually changed to "Master/Lord [Person] which sounds just as good)

are no big deal. The only times translations are really
bad is when they do things like mistake a character's gender or lie. Like how 4Kids said Brock's mom was dead when the orignal simply said she walked out, she returned later and now people want to saw this woman his his dad's new girlfriend instead of his wife.

I love dubs. Unless it's a butchery of a dub, like Cardcaptor Sakura, I prefer to watch the dub over sub, which i read very easily.

Also, about annoying Enlgish voice actors; I'm sure there are plenty of japanese who can't stand some japanese dubs/voice acting.

I agree... for the most part. I'll grant that in the early 90's before anime was popular and almost nobody wanted to do the voice work the dubs were utter crap. There was no money in doing the job so people sort of avoided it.

That said, some of the early dubs are classic. Yu Yu Hakusho, Ranma 1/2, Dragonball Z, a lot of the ones you grew up watching in English I can't imagine in Japanese. Alright I can because I've seen them, but the American ones seem to fit them so much better. The camp value adds a certain intangible characteristic to the shows. They were all absurdly over the top stuff when they came out, and you kind of lose that feeling if the voice acting is too serious.

Another point: No matter what an American teen says, they do NOT understand Japanese vocal inflections. Vocal quality is a huge chunk of what brings in the emotion to a piece. If you listen to it in English you will understand the voice quality, regardless of the voice work (unless it's really, REALLY bad) and the feeling will be much more truthful. This leads into my next point:

If you don't speak Japanese then it doesn't matter if you watch it in Japanese: You're still reading the subtitles. You're for the most part neglecting the voices in the first place in order to read the subtitles fast enough to figure out what is going on. If you do that then it doesn't matter the quality of the voice acting in any language: You're still reading it in your own voice. You don't GET to argue in that case.

TL;DR : You don't speak Japanaese, you twit. Watch it in English.

The ED is just as atrocious as the OP. Someone posted a video of Vic Mignogna singing the ED instead and it was actually BETTER than the official version.

Well you have to remember that FUNi had to make SGT. Frog that way. The Japanese companies offten give dub companies instructions on what they have to do for the show. In the case of Sgt. Fro0g it needs to air on TV. There is no way around that. And sadly in order for it to be a hit or even marketable on TV those changes are needed. Of course FUNi NEVER goes to the lengths 4kids goes.

Oh I love love LOVE the Ouran English Opening. Really I think people hate it for being English and only for that reason. It sound pretty much identical to the Japanese version.
