All right, this is a topic that just BLOWS MY F-ING MIND at this point because of the sheer stupidity. Let's make some rules for this post and leave our stupidity at the door. Be relevant, back up your arguments with some reasons, and let's just discuss in a civilized manner.

Okay, I'm getting sick of all the sub-purists (people who dislike English-dubbed anime in favor of ONLY subtitles) out there who raise hell every time a dub is played. I used to be a sub-purist, but then I started watching some of the dubs and realized, "Hey, some of these are pretty good!" I refuse to blindly believe something without proof. In this case, I decided to try some dubs and realized that they weren't NEARLY as bad as they used to be.

So, I think that sub-purisim is incredibly stupid because everytime I ask a sub-purist WHY they FRICKIN LOSE THEIR MINDS whenever a dub is played, they give me the same answers, and they're generally extremely shallow arguments.

1. "The English dubs don't match the flaps (mouth movements) but the Japanese dubs do." Okay...actually, American companies normally work very hard to match the flaps. (Example: FFVII Advent Children. It got pushed back HOW MANY TIMES due to translation and flap problems?) In fact, Japanese companies do the animation and dubbing totally independently and normally don't pay that much attention to the flaps, so they are normally WORSE. Naruto has some of these issues on a recurring basis, as did Dragonball, and many others.

2. "The voices are annoying!" Okay. This is a given. I totally understand. Yet, if you never LISTEN to the dubbing, how can you say that all dubbing is terrible for this reason??!!!! Also, I personally get a little tired of all the school girls sounding almost exactly alike with the high girly voices. In fact, many anime with many characters recycle voice actors. ONE might play TEN in one series! Talk about IRRITATING! Plus, in some series the voice actors chosen use accents to show different nationalities and such--much more interesting (Negima).

ALSO, guys (purists), do you not realize that Goku is voiced by a WOMAN (as is Kenshin, originally)????!!! [color=violet]The STRONGEST anime character in HISTORY, one of the two series that put Anime in AMERICA is a WOMAN?!! WTF?! You cannot say this is BETTER than the dubbing. Be realistic. It's like the Japanese dubbing the Terminator with a girl's voice and us saying that it's better. COME ON.

3. "Things are lost in translation" Yes, also a good argument, but in all reality people, 90% of the viewers DO NOT FRICKING UNDERSTAND ASIAN HUMOR. Even I occasionally have some issues with it. If people cannot relate to a series, then they WILL NOT WATCH IT. If no one watched anime in the US, there would be no conventions, and we would not be able to buy DVDs for slightly reasonable prices, and the soundtracks would be less accessible, etc.

To go along with this, the anime that I am thinking of right now is NOT "Re Shabarieru De On." It is "Le Chevalier D'Eon". When animes use foreign words, they obviously do not have those sounds in the Japanese language so they do their best, which is great, but guys, if you're going to b***h about translation, then I'm going to point out that a lot of companies in the West use actors who can pronounce those words the way they were meant to be pronounced. Example: That little girl in Slayers is NOT A-Me-Ri-A. Her name is AMELIA. And in Bleach, they are not Bi-za-ru-do. They are Vizards. Shut up about how people pronounce Naruto. My last name is Harada. I live in AMERICA, so I pronounce the R as a Western R. Also, if I were like some of these dub-purists out there, I would b***h constantly about the pronouciation of my daughter's name. Her name is Hiroko and everyone pronounces the R. She knows both pronounciations. SHE doesn't care. I don't see what the difference is, and why we should be freaking out like some people do.

By the way, Japanese audiences tend to like dubs a lot. For instance, Naruto saying "dattebayo" constantly is no less annoying than "believe it!"... and the director of FMA likes the English dub a lot because of the terminology and such. It's on the DVD. Youtube that.

Okay, so I've mostly gotten this whole thing off my chest. There is more, but I will add when I have collected my thoughts. I do not mean offense to those of you who simply don't care to hear English coming out of your favorite characters' voices. I do not mean disrespect to anyone who is respectful of other peoples' preferences. I am totally cool with people who simply enjoy anime in its raw form. That is totally fine. The people at whom I am directing this are those who walk into a room while, for example, I am watching anime dubbed (though I watch both equally, and even un-subbed just FYI), and stand there and b***h about how dubbing is so terrible and they give me totally flimsy reasoning, and then look down on me. I see a lot of these people at conventions and on forums and I'm tired of it.

I openly admit that there are some animes in which the dubbing is simply ATROCIOUS to the point where I would like to kick some puppies, but really guys, the companies here are really working hard to make anime accessible and enjoyable for EVERYONE and so I would appreciate it if people could be a bit more courteous about other people's preferences.

Despite how many people will "TL;DR" this, I agree 100% to this age-old argument/debate/bitchfest.

I have to agree with you.
Honestly, I think it depends on the dub. If you think about it, most of the people woh say "DUBS SUCK!" have most likely heard the Japanese version first.

[by the way, that's a giant wall of text o__o I wonder if most of the AMC will read that...]

I didn't actually read the whole wall, but I understand what I read. Not all dubs are badly translated and acted. There are some series that are stronger in English than in the original Japanese form.
It's all about preference.
The biggest thing with dubbers versus anti-dubbers, is that they both are elitist groups. It's not easy for people to accept that what someone else might enjoy, may not be directed specifically at them, if that makes any sense; They don't HAVE to watch it.
It's optional, and it's put there for the sole purpose of preference and whether you
enjoy what the production company has given you.

Oh god that's a lot of text there.

I'm going to assume it's the same ol' anti-dub-hating we usually got and say I agree.
There's good and bad instances in any media, but it doesn't make all of that media bad.

I love (LOVE) the Bleach dub and the Samurai Shamploo dubs for the most part.
I HATE the OHSHC dub. It's godly awful.

However, I'm still gonna check out other dubs, there could be other much better ones out there.

I agree.
I love dubs.
Some can get... Annoying... *cough*pokemon*cough*
But I usually prefer dubs. ^_^

Mreh, idc really xP Sometimes the Dubs just sound really bad though =P Other times they sound really good =)

I prefer Subs over dubs.

To me it's because they sound more like I would expect them to.

I watched Code Geass in Sub then in dub and I nearly slaughtered people when I heard lulu speak in english, he sounded ridiculous... and no way they can copy that cute maniacal laugh of his...

It just depends what you prefer to hear. It is the individuals experience after all ^.^;

I agree,
Although, subs have a tendency to be better more of the time than dubs, I love dubs when its done correctly.
Like Samurai Champloo.. Mugen's Jap voice actor sucked!! The voice was too deep. I think the dub got it just right.

"Excuse me, sir! You forgot your rope!"
I usually like the dubs anyway since I like watching stuff in my native language and not read words (much).

I hate # titles and post styles. Now have at you!

Great Job

In a word, Yes.

And that is SO wrong.

On SO many levels.
