Being a ninja isn't something done over night. And in my opinion, I believe that Naruto is inacuraite with the speed.
I always felt that it took well over 13 years for them actually get to a "gennin" level. Look at Jakie Chan. In a sence, he is like a ninja. He knows how to do the physical moves and it took him almost 2o years to get to his level.
I know that there are some forms of karate that take over 1o years to get a black belt. And I have a feeling that becoming a ninja is one of those things that will take over 6 years (if you look at the time line, the main characters started their education on becoming ninjas at the age of 6-7. Time skip, and become 13 year olds.) to become a ninja when there are so many ocupational hazards in the job discription.
Of course you must realize that their entire existence is devoted to becoming ninjas. Most every other "ninja" in the world today had at least something else to do, Jackie does movies and formerly a cartoon show, for example. As he says nearly every episode, naruto has two goals: 1. get sasuke back 2. become hokage. Both goals require him to be at the level he is now. Plus he has had one on one teachings by kakashi and Jiraiya. Getting away from naruto himself, Sakura was mentored by Tsunade, and Lee was nearly a clone of Gai.

True. But I think you missed my point. The show seems to obscure the training.
In the Academy, all we know is that they sat on their butts except for recess and kunai training and studied techneques by reading and later on in the day practice that. These are little children around the age of 7. Have you ever tried to get a 7 year old to do something such as studing for let's say, 3o minutes? It's very difficult because these kids would either find it hard or they will get bored and play with their friends.
Only the smart ones would be creative and actually use what they learned and turn it into a game (one of the eps they showed where the kids were playing "ninja" with card board sharikin). That is the closes to training most of those kids had ever done, and we know that little kids really wouldn't take it that seriouse because they were having too much fun to notice.
But how many of those students had access to the knowlegd of the ninja life and how to survive, excluding the school. We know for a fact that Sakura is more of the average person in the show. So there are chances that there are more children who had a normal up-bringing such as Sakura, but ended up being thrown into the world of ninja-ing.
Now fastforward to when they are 13 and with the chunnin exam ordeal. It was if you placed white belts in with green and orange belts with the ocasional black belt in to rip their heads off. About 6 months after they had earned their white belt. That is the part that I was trying to state. That there are some things where they fast forward on strength but not on age.
But then again, this is an anime and manga. They do have licence to do that to make a good show.
