The Land Before Time (the original, not the many musical sequels) was also pretty dark.
I felt so bad for Little Foot when his mother died ;__;

And of course there's Bambi...

Bambi has nothing compared to Ringing Bell. Ringing Bell starts off all cute and sweet, a Sanrio kids movie about a cute, frolicsome, little sheep... then a wolf comes and kills his mom (who gave her life to keep the wolf from killing him) and then he goes off after the wolf wanting to become strong enough to take revenge, then decides he's going to be a wolf instead of a sheep, and the ending is such it makes all the traumatic scenes in Bambi look tame. and it honestly is a kids movie, it's kodomo, it's not one of those looks-like-kodomo-but-isn't things like Chi's Sweet Home.

Haha, it's not pathetic; I think this is a really great sale! I already have some of these movies, but I may try to get NIMH on DVD since I only have it on VHS......

I thought Felidae was worse in the dark animal movie department, but it wasn't intended for kids anyway.

it is kind of a whole different thing when an animated movie isn't intended for kids. I watched Ringing Bell for the first time when I was still pretty young (I want to say I was in second grade since I know it was after I saw the movie for Watership Down but before I read the book) and even having seen Watership Down, Bambi, and both Unico movies (there's nightmare-bait in those, too) the ending STILL disturbed me then. first anime I ever saw that made me cry, I swear. I felt SO bad for Chirin at the end.

and one day I have to watch more than just a few clips from Felidae, just because.

It is.

I only saw it about a year ago, so it didn't have that much of a profound effect on me.

I did enjoy it though, and was surprised at how dark it was for a kid's movie.

Guess that explains why Enzai is my favourite anime o.o
