So I've been on an animated movie marathon this weekend because I actually had some free time. I'll just mention a couple of movies that kinda stumped me.

First, I watched The Hunchback of Notre Dame, my favorite Disney movie as a kid. My eyes practically fell out of my head when I heard Frollo singing Hellfire. I know the book the movie is based on is pretty dark, but geez, I can't believe when I was little I didn't even realize that Frollo was singing about raping and murdering Esmerelda. In fact, the entire movie was pretty dark, though not nearly as grim as the book. I still love the movie to bits, but I'm just totally surprised I didn't catch on to all of the things going on in the movie.

Oh. My teacher played Pom Poko during class. In case you don't know what I'm talking about, here's some screenshots.

Tanuki mythology makes me laugh so much.
As for darkest films, definately Watership Down and the Plauge Dogs.
I'd say American Pop as well, but it's more on the natural side of dark.

EDIT: Favorite classic Disney film? I'd say Pinnochio. Though out of the recents I love Treasure Planet.

you have to realize that the whole thing about exaggerating the size of the testicles raccoon dogs have goes back to old pictures aimed at amusing kids. PomPoko uses that since it's really a huge cultural thing in Japan. I believe PomPoko it PG in North America, but it's probably true in Japan it's rated G.

I read the book beforehand, but I didn't expect the part where Woundwort tears out Blackavar's throat. That scene was terrifying.
Plauge Dogs was done by the same guy, and is equally creepy and awesome.

Plague Dogs could be considered pretty nightmare inducing as well, but for different reasons. considering it's about two dogs that escape from an animal testing facility and are being hunted down because the scientists think they were exposed to the black death, well... add in the fact one had brain surgery that makes him pretty schizo and the other underwent testing and treatment to try and test the limits of how long he could survive in water without drowning (actually letting him get to the point he needed to be revived after drowning when he couldn't swim anymore)...

As a kid, I remember not being to fond of Hunchback, now that I'm 16, I freakin' love it.

As for Plague Dogs and Watership Down... the less said the better... *Mentally scarred from childhood* Adore them now though sweatdrop

I remember that, actually, The Brave Little Toaster had some pretty dark moments. XD

And, on a newer note... Coraline. The scene in the theater, with the Other Misses Spink and Forcible. Cannot un-see gonk

oh, and if you want to count Japanese films then there's Chirin no Suzu/RInging Bell. the thing was a product of Sanrio, the same company behind Hello Kitty, and based on a kids book, BUT IT MADE BAMBI SEEM PERFECTLY KID-FRIENDLY~
