Hey kids. I'm here with a simple enough question:

How old is too old to enjoy manga and anime?

Now, before you whip out your torches and pitchforks, let me explain that I'm sure lots of you think there really shouldn't be any age restriction on Anime or Manga, and you're probably right. But there is a decided stigma (in the United States, at least) of people who still like Anime at 20, 22, 23, and beyond. So: How old is too old?

I find that the more mature a person is, the less likely they are to harass another person's hobbies. Unfortunately, there's quite a few people out there who age without maturing...

So do you think there's a point at which age becomes a barrier to enjoying anime? Does the subject matter--leaving hentai and ecchi out of the conversation, for now--matter? Particularly: Do 'kid shows' apply only to people in their target age range?

I don't think any age is too old. I've seen people in their 30's or 40's still enjoying anime and manga, though I guess with family/work etc they won't be as obsessed about it as much.

The way I see it, they sell adult merchandise with Looney Tunes and Disney characters on it. So why would enjoying anime be any different?

I can't really set an age on it since I know people of so many different ages that do like anime or work with/around it. Restricting the hobby by age never occurred to me.

As far as age being a barrier, I've never let it stop me or hinder my enjoyment of it.

Possibly, I would look at it a bit funny if a 40 year old man continued to watch those magical girl genre simply for that brief second of blank nudity and clinched storyline of heart and the power of love. However, you can still enjoy it as a closet fan, after all, everything is so easily acquired via the internet.

As old as you want to be, there is no age limit for watching anime and reading manga. As long as you enjoy it, the keep on watching and reading for as long as you want.

Sure kid shows are aimed at kids, but some still like watching it. Also, older people might enjoy josei and senin series as that demographic is aimed for young adults.

And this is exactly the sort of reaction I'm talking about. Are you freaked out because he likes anime at 51, or because he or she is ON GAIA at 51? Being 23, i have little issue with the more seasoned folks being involved in the fandom, too. If they weren't or couldn't be, what would happen to the current generation of anime fans, or comic fans, or video game fans? Will they be as ostracized as the above poster just for doing something they enjoy that doesn't really cause anyone any harm?

I one time watched a Rurouni Kenshin movie with my grandfather out of bordom. He enjoyed it. He is 76 years old. That's my answer.
