Its a marketing scheme! Makes people feel they know more about the anime if they know what the names mean, nothing like being shot down because you are to stupid to know Tien does not only mean Flower, but is also Chinese. Yeah... I was shot down!
yea makes me wonder why the creator of DBZ made everyone name refer to food of some sort....hehe food obsession xp

lol! like gohan means cooked rice! blaugh

In time they won't even be subtle anymore rolleyes

"Spaztic-sidekick-character-that's-not-as-important-as-me-but-is-still-required-for-comic-relief-san! We need to go save Girl-who's-distraught-because-she's-in-love-with-more-than-one-man-but-can't-decide-who-she-really-wants- even-though-we-both-know-she'll-end-up-with-me-because-I-have-more-lines-chan!

She's caught in the clutches of Sterotypical-cackling-bad-guy!"

Err, well in DragonBall Z the naming scheme ranges from dairy products and other foods, to musical instruments, to underwear... lol

I can't remember what Rikku means, but Sora means Sky, and Kairi means Nautical Mile (kingdom hearts)

I know Sango, from Inu-yasha, means Coral.
I didn't see anyone mention Naruto... Naruto are those little start shaped things in Ramen. Naruto eats a lot of naruto...

Kairi, when written right, means Sea, and Rikku means land.

The only InuYasha names that relate to the charactor/story are InuYasha and Naraku.

InuYasha= dog demon
Naraku= hell

I think Sesshoumaru has the coolest name though! His can mean either "the Killing Perfection" or "destroyer of the circle of life". How wicked is that? whee
yeah I've noticed I think is because they want the names to relate because why should the names be meaning less?

naruto is usually put in ramen...and Naruto loves ramen.

Also the word naruto can refer to like...swirls...
well sure.. and japanese names are usually relaited to nature.. sorry if somone said it already.. also japanese ppl seem to like fooling around with letters and information.. I mean.. like in pokemon(the oldest example in my books) ekans use mirror and it reads snake. lame example.. who cares?

Have you ever noticed that the characters in anime often have names that pertain directly to what the whole anime series is about like...for example
Nami(from One Piece) "Nami" means "wave" in japanese, wave.....pirates....the ocean...anyone but me see a connection? hmm? question

uh. . .yea. . .that's done on purpose ^^; Read or watch anything and you'll see that that's done with names, places, everything basically. . .trust me ^_^ l'm a published writer, it's the best and easiest tactic to use in story telling. And when done right, you can lead people down one path, and then switch it at the very end. lol ^_^
Yes I have noticed.
Just like Edward Elrick has everything to do with alchemy. Just joking, but yeah I noticed that. Just like Captain Morgan and Roronoa Zoro and Alvida were all based off of real pirates.
ya you are right like in fullmoon how the girls name means fullmoon sweatdrop
