And CN was only able to start competing with bigger networks largely because of Toonami and now Adult Swim.
neutral No, they don't. They could air any one of hundreds of animated series.
The shows also aren't made out of the kindness of the artists' or original Japanese production comapnies' hearts. That doesn't mean that the people involved (CN, artists, Japanese companies all) don't enjoy doing what they do.
And as Mireo already stated . . . CN didn't need Japanese anime to compete. They were doing just fine with their original series.

To be honest, I'd rather go without and not know what I'm missing, than to watch some watered down, edited version of a good show. Otherwise, I'd always be thinking, "I wonder what I missed"?
Maybe I'm crazy.
That's your business. Buy DVDs and let those who enjoy CN/WB/Foxbox/whatever do so.
