lets not forget about the Sailor Starlights... I think that's what they were called. Boys who went to school with Sailor moon in season 5 but transformed into magical girls. That has to be the first thing that popped into my head when I thought of magical boys. I'd also argue that Cardcaptor Sakura had the silver haired friend who turned into an angel like person. If a guy who transforms into a way cuter version of himself and is dedicated to protecting another and has magical powers isn't a magical boy then I don't know what is.

The Starlights is right! And you're thinking of Yue as far as Sakura goes.

I would think, provided that there's a transformation sequence of some sort, it would count as a "Magical Boy." Think... Tuxedo Kamen, the Starlights, Ronin Warriors, potentially Tenchi from Tenchi Muyo and so forth. The main difference between said males is,
1. Usually won't be naked during said transformation.
2. Would usually be in a more "masculine" uniform, be it armor, or the tuxedo.

The starlights were naked. Tenchi did not wear actual armor (he inherited it from his mom anyway). Women have also transformed into armor/tehc suits.

Clothes are not the differece, just the sex.

I was going by generalities. Not that others don't happen as well, I suppose I should have worded that better, either way.

Again, clothes aren't a generality, as it's been so blurred, you no longer know when 'masculine on men' starts and 'feminine on men' ends. Same with women, thanks to Utena, who is, literally, a girl prince (and Jesus).

Never seen that one. Most of my anime that would include such a thing were generally on Toonami back in the early 2000's, and Adult swim, then whatever I saw on the internet never really had transformations. I guess I'll just have to plead ignorance.

Most of the good stuff was not on Toonami, even the last (and kickass) season of Sailormoon.

You'd never get Utena on an American channel; it's full of lesbians, Gnostic symbolism, torture, implied incest, and insanity.

Edit: and murder. I don't know how I forgot murder.

I've honestly never read the manga. Did they explicitly show or say they were screwing? Because the anime never showed or outright said it (the movie was as explicit as possible without actually showing porn, I admit).
How do you people know so much about Sailor Moon? LOL

Honestly, wouldn't it just be a case of marketing? Magical girls can be sexualised to appeal to both male and female audiences. Girls don't tend to want to watch magic/action of pretty boys as much, though there are plenty of male harem anime (not magical, but still sexualising males).

It's been around since the 90's. It's ancient in internet years. It's also pirated like crazy since those who have it licensed have been playing hot potato with it and it's impossible to get the accurate versions of episodes without resorting to bootlegs.

Wrong. Card captor Sakura went of for quite w while and the main character was prepubescent. Same with all versions of PreCure. Fushigi Yuugi can be classified as Magical girl ad that's also a female's harem anime. And again, there's Utena, the sexiest gnostic symbolsim there is where everyone but the shota is sexualised.

There's a large following of women and girls who are fans of Power Rangers, Kamen Rider (mostly Kabuto through OOO-or whatever it is--but black has many female watchers and fans as well.

Marketing has nothing to do with it. Magical girls is just a female trope of Magical boys just as a harem of boys is a female's trope while a harem of girls is a boy trope.

Edit: Sailormoon was the first Magical girl anything. ti's popularity had to do with equality, not marketing. What did have to do with marketing fans didn't like (and was sexualized).

I think I'm thinking of the movie and one small snipit of the manga... I don't have it, but I think it was fairly early.

Its a bit bizzare that I don't have it, it must have been my highschool friend's. Bizzare because last time I had the heart to account- I had approx $1,200 worth of Manga (and some Anime) redface cool

Isn't that still marketing though? In each example you listed, the characters are sexualised. Even CCS, despite being prepubescent, wears something you wouldn't want your daughter wearing out. I have to admit, I found her attractive when I was a kid.

The sexualisation can be empowering to women (marketing) and also attract male fans (marketing). Otherwise, why make them wear what they're wearing if there was no purpose to it?

All I can think of now is a big hunky guy in sailor moon's outfit. Thanks Kairi. rofl

I'm pretty neutral on it. I was in a roleplay and it... I don't know, it didn't seem particularly different? I find it interesting though that in most cases 'magical boys' are not even half as sexualized as the women (skimpy outfits, constant relationship issues, so on).

Then again, how many people would really watch a bunch of muscular men without shirts going around beating things up? Looks at Jersey Shore.

I wouldn't call most magical girls particularly sexualized. Sure, they often have skimpy outfits, but that's generally to appeal to the young girls reading the manga or watching the anime, they like the cute little dresses and skirts. Sailor Moon, along with other magical girl anime, have generally avoided panty shots and "fanservicey" suggestive positions and whatnot.

Actually, Sailor Moon was not the first magical girl work. They've been around since about the 60's or 70's. However, Sailor Moon did revitalize, reinvent, and popularize the whole idea, and many magical girl works that came after it borrowed a lot of ideas and elements that Sailor Moon had.
