There are various shows that have real life politics that affect the world, story and how the future world became what it was in the show. In GitS, there is currently a big debate about the population of Japan with immigrants and the dwindling youths which plays a big role in the second season. In Psycho Pass the leaching of technology into every crevasse of everyday life and genetic engineering plays a big role in the antagonists actions throughout the show. The fact that the plants/factories are not maintained or operated by humans is something that's starting to go on in factories across the nation. C had to do a lot with politics, economy and how money is exchanged in Japan. A big thing about passing money under the table for favors. Eden of the East talks a lot about a lot of politics including wealth distribution, immigration, NEETs, and the declining economy. Attack on Titan and GitS, if you've read the manga, are page to page worth of politics, it's almost reading a book. Though in Attack on Titan you can argue that the force that is driving the series is the politics behind animal cruelty and the food industry.

I'm also looking for a series that was probably made in the last 10 years that's set in the future in what I can recall to be a dry desert city environment where there was advanced technology but there was a big plot point about Carbon Tariffs. Apparently the US has made considerable strides to reduce the carbon footprint of the nation since 2005 especially in national energy, and promises to keep reducing them until 2030 along with China after their summit the other week.
