... Berserk probably had one of the better manga-based games out there.

The Dreamcast game made me <3

I'm really not sure what to say about Berserk. It'd probably be pretty obvious of me to say I actually own all of it.

... and Puck singlehandedly drags Berserk down from any possibility of being the manliest manga. It's like the artist said 'Man, if I don't do something about how manly my manga is, women will sprout beards and chest hair while reading this. I better stick in some magical cute humor!"

the best manga i have read so far got every thing i like: awesome main hero(kinda tired wimpy main chars), awesome story that involves everything(romance, drama, action, comedy, fantasy), all the creatures are drawn in a magnificent way.
but there is one thing that i really hate in this series: the time it takes them to make a new chapter (i haven't read berserk for half a year now because of the waiting)

Usually when reading shonen/seinen I wouldn't get my hopes up on romance, but this manga is so full of win heart


I agree, the only drawback of this manga is the... slow update... I guess half of it is because of the mangaka's laziness and the other half is because the art is very detailed ^^;

Well, I like Berserk a lot, and it's in my list of top mangas for sure, but I never agree when somebody says it's the most manly. biggrin I have lots of reasons for that, really...

... and the Dreamcast game, you played as Gutts.

That should answer the 'was it an action game'. XD

It was a... beat-em-up. You were awesomely, ridiculously overpowered. You could swing your sword either up/down or left/right, you had your crossbow, you could shoot your cannon, throw your bombs...

... and blood EVERYWHERE. biggrin It actually... did NOT follow the manga's storyline. It actually kind of slotted into a part of the manga where it basically qualifies as 'So he was wandering around now'. So it's an official... sidestory. It fits between parts of the manga's storyline.

In my opinion, in order to be a REALLY truly manly manga, it helps if you don't have any sympathetic female characters, any cute mascot characters, little kids as main characters, magical fairy sparkles or pretty art. (Berserk has all of those)

Good examples would be uh... Kaiji/Gambling Emperor Zero.

Grappler Baki or anything by that same artist.

Tough, or anything else by that artist.

Shamo is pretty damn manly too.

Worst, or anything else by THAT artist.

... mostly fighting series I listed, but other than Shamo, the only women in those series tend to be beaten with the ugly stick. ... and in Shamo they're only pretty so they can be whores and/or raped. D:

... no magically sparkles, no cute mascots, no kid characters...

Some good art in some of them, but it's not PRETTY art.

I guess it's because manliest =/= best. Quite far from it.



As an art student, I actually view Berserk's awesome art with many point of view... Miura definitely can draw many kinds of monsters. Some of them are pretty damn cool, most of them look plain ugly (That's how monsters should look like, lol). And... as an artist, he really has pretty damn wide range, quite unlike most mangaka. He can draw insects, dragons, horses, amazing perspectives... landscapes...


Good armor designs, well. Just pure awesomeness.


Of all those manga, I've only read Shamo, and wasn't that interested with the story...

I think it's quite funny that practically at war, the soldiers would be awestruck when Griffith opened his helmet. And then, everybody would compliment his beauty. WE ARE IN WAR GAIZ, BUT HE'S JUST TOO DAZZLING WE CAN'T KEEP QUIET! xd


And did you notice that in latest chapters, it seems like Miura want the easy way to end the chapter and only put Griffith's head from various angle in the whole page? Sometimes I can only lol. What a perfect way to end a chapter, throw a pretty face and the reader would be satisfied! XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
