It's probably because weeaboo fans think that it makes them sound more Japanese, and therefore cool.
And I've heard of much worse names given to children than Light.
I believe you. I'd appreciate if some who calls him Raito come in here and explain their reasoning.
they don't know i BURN.

        I write it like that.
Only because I'm used to it.
I do the same with Al from FMA - I write it 'Aru'.
And the name 'Light' sounds faggoty anyways.
User Image
But Al's a nickname. Light is Light's full name. Also I'd kinda see that as biased in my opinion.

        Yeah, I still say 'Aruphonse'.
        Biased?

Justice is what we should all strive for...

Because maybe some people are so used to listening to the Japanese version of Death Note, that they are so used to saying "Raito" because that how they say it in Japanese. So when it's pronounced "Light", they perfer to say it how they oringinaly heard it.

Japanese pronounce the letter L as R.
Raito is the closest thing they can get to Light. They also kind of roll their R's so it sounds a bit more L - like.

Wow. I'm a literate Death Note fan.

His name wouldn't even be correctly romanized that way. It'd be 「アルフォンス」, or "Arufonsu".

There is still a debate over this?

I don't know Japanese at all, so I still don't get how the character "tsuki" = Light.

In any case, I only call him Raito in fanfiction to avoid strange sentences.

several kanji have at least two ways to be pronounced, some even have more than two ways. the kanji for "moon," typically read as "tsuki," can be pronounced so it sounds like "raito," altho it's an uncommon pronunciation. the mangaka stated they wanted the name romanized to Light and "raito" would be how the katakana used to spell "light" would get romanized to. thus the kanji for "moon" can be romanized (not translated, romanized) to "Light."

I read fanfic.
Where reading aloud means constantly mixing up "L" and "Light" because of the alliteration.

Also, since the Japanese have some difficulty pronouncing the word "L"-- look at L's name, and how they pronounce it Eru-- Raito is just how it comes out. Some English fans call him by that because they may have seen the original Japanese first, read the manga, or just because.

Why complain?

I write 'Raito' because I don't watch the anime, I read the manga.
I fail to see how that makes a difference. The information book on Death Note uneditted in the original Japanese version still has it Light.

It doesn't make a difference. And in the manga I read, he was called Raito.

Not sure why it matters, though.
Actually, I don't think that the Japanese people pronounce "Light" like "Raito" just because they can't pronounce L and they have to end their words with vowels (although that's a reason, too).

I think it's because Tsugumi Ohba decided to make it kind of a pun. You see, "raito" in Japanese actually means lightning. So it's kind of a pun if it's "Light" and then it's "Lightning".

Of course, this is just my opinion.

failo. the kanji for Light's name means "moon." "raikou" is "lightning" and "raitoningu" is Engrish for "lightning."

Eh, I sometimes say it 'Raito' because I think it sounds cool/funny.

Also I usually say 'Raito' when I say the name Japanese style: Yagami Raito; as opposed to when I say it English style: Light Yagami. Why? I don't know, maybe I'm retarded.
