as someone who remembers the mess from when Vs threads were allowed I'm against allowing them back, even if it's stated they have to be set up with points that make them discussion worthy.

the problem was no one was doing that and many of the replies were based on how attractive or popular the character was even if that should have had no impact on the outcome. plus I doubt most will bother to set up a good vs situation even if they're told they're supposed to.

I think a subforum for recommendations would be better, seeing that stickies often go unnoticed in this forum.
This.

Yeah, this. AMC seems to get enough recommendation threads to warrant a subforum.

At what topics should be allowed, I agree they should be judged individually. If someone puts some effort into their topic, and there's plenty of points to be discussed, it should stay.

On the vs. topic, comparing and contrasting characters can make for interesting discussion. But I understand how people see the word "vs" and auto-respond with "LOL ____ WOULD WIN." Keeping "vs" out of the title is a good rule. But allow topics that the OP is smart enough to word right. "A comparison of Bleach characters" will get better responses than "Ichigo VS Urahara," or whatever.

from past experience even setting things up properly doesn't make much difference as even if the whole things included impartial factors people would typically reply with stuff like "I don't know one of the characters so I'd have to say the other" or "this character is cuter so they'd beat the other one." even when set up with plenty of information and done well enough for it to actually be discussion worthy the number of people who actually didn't give answers that were over a sentence long were very minimal. that even went with stuff with titles not formatted as "Character A vs Character B."

Yeah, I remember seeing that kind of stuff as well back when vs threads were allowed. The problem is that most of the kids that post on the main board aren't mature enough to handle them. They work fine in smaller, slower moving subforums like Comics Discussion....but they just become a huge mess in the AMC main.

okay I think the overuse of subforums being pushed as hot topics and then linking them here as well is a prime example on why we need to get rid of/merge/ do something about all these subforums.

I like the idea of merging the TV Anime and Anime Series & Movies subforums. I also like the idea of making new stickies, because I see those threads a lot and I never know where to tell them to post them.

I dislike the ideas of closing all the subforums, because I could see this getting really confusing, especially with series where the manga and anime have especially different stories, like Bokurano and Full Metal Alchemist.

You should go look at the entertainment discussion forum. You actually have to scroll down quite a bit to even see the forum part.

Personally I wish there was a way to make entire subforums invisible. I have no need to ever ever ever ever ever go into the pony one. I'm around two bronys enough as it is.
  • Two anime subfoums should be merged into one. Manga forum should be kept seperate.
As it stands now, the criteria of the threads that belong in the two anime subforums depends on what has and hasn’t “aired on US television” which generally singles out users who’re not from the US (nor those who’re familiar with US television) and those who rather access legal websites (such as Netflix or Crunchy Roll) to watch anime instead. A change would be very welcome.

Retaining one anime subforum would prevent a bulk of series-related threads flooding out miscellaneous discussions (ie: demographic, genres, fan analysis, VAs, conventions and etc) threads on the main board while not necessarily making manga, comic and cartoon fans “singled out” either. (Not to mention there must have been a valid reason for the main forum to require separating threads with not one but two anime subforums in the first place.)

On the other hand though; specific forums would result in confusion and unnecessary duplicate threads. Many anime are rendition/adaptations of manga (or vice-versa) so it would be problematic for the specific “anime-only“, “manga-only” forums should someone want to make an “official” thread discussing both/all media platforms of one particular series.

As a possible solution; those “official” threads could be made on the main forum amongst the miscellaneous threads, and a [regularly updated] announcement (or locked sticky) could be made in each subforum; providing a helpful list of the already existing “official“ user-run threads to cut down on a few duplicate threads.. or something...

  • Rename the forum to “Animation/Manga/Comics” for simplicity?
A lot of new users don't realize that [western] cartoons can also be discussed in the AMC, and I think a lot of others here would be grateful if there was a clearer way to suggest that they can. On the other hand though; renaming the forum might not be the best approach as "Anime" is probably more attractive, since it's what more people tend to look for, and it may displace people to read "Animation" instead. Argh.

Also in relation the series-based subforums you’ve recently created and linked here for the Hot Topics segment - would it be possible to consider just linking to the main Hot Topics forum (and listing relevant tiles under the brief description) instead of cluttering the list with various series-specific subforums? Otherwise, something really needs to be done to minimize it.

  • Make an “Assistance” subforum, where users can request/recommend titles, source images/descriptions and explain franchise related terminology (etc).
Theoretically, it would be run/answered by users much like the “Questions & Assistance” forum, and various “main” genre or demographic specific recommendation superthreads (again, run by users) could be implemented, allowing an easier categorisation, and potentially less of an impact should one of the thread owners leave and a new user take over /reboots one "small" thread - rather then a heavy-duty sticky that many more people would rely on.

In addition to that, it would also cover subjects like “What is this anime” source threads and "What does ____ mean?" lexicon threads. ..Although thinking about it; a sticky would probably be best for one or both of those subjects, to avoid bulks of repetitive, one answer / hit-and-run threads being made.

  • Remind users that it’s not encouraged to post in misplaced threads?
A lot of people in this forum like to take matters into their own hands and tell (and occasionally harass/troll) the misplaced OP where they went wrong and why doing so is a result of rule break. Their intentions are usually in the right place, but I find it ironically annoying that they’re bumping and technically also [unknowingly] spamming while forewarning the OP that spam isn’t allowed.

  • Clear up a small contradiction with the guidelines/rules regarding the discussion of pornographic material?
The AMC guidelines state that we’re allowed to discuss pornographic titles on a “Gaia-appropriate”/ PG-13 level, however the ToS contradicts this by stating users should not “post, request, or link to sexually explicit material or conduct”.

It's not exactly a big issue, but I‘d appreciate it if it was made a little clearer. Especially as Yaoi recommendation threads are fairly common here, or how discussing titles may still technically count as indirectly promoting, and you can't really determine if the OP, or users who view/reply to the thread, are old enough to be viewing said content.

  • Even though they may be vaguely delivered/answered; some threads that are covered by the stickies which have the potential to spark discussion should be allowed
I'm not suggesting the stickies should be removed, just that from the current list of what isn’t acceptable, this may include:
    "Does anyone remember <show>?"
    Has anyone seen/read <show/comic>?
    "Is anyone watching/reading <show/comic>?"
What do you think of <show/comic>?"
And a few subjects covered in “What/Which…” stickes so long as it encourages users to give a reason for their answer to build on

The aim would be to review the stickies slightly so they're a little less strict in the sense that both the users and mods can determine whether or not a few certain threads are reportable spam or has potential - instead of it just being a written fact that "Oh, that's a 'Which anime' thread. It should be removed.". If it doesn't work out, the stickies could always be rectified again.

Perhaps there could also be a stressed reminder in the guidelines that states those who make overtly vague opening posts / replies (with little to nothing to build on) don’t necessarily contribute to discussion and therefore counts as spam? The same could be said of duplicate threads (ex: a related thread about a certain series/genre/etc that already has a megathread to discuss it in.)

  • Quality of Mods over quantity.
Agreeing with basically what everyone else has said about this subject.

What AMC needs is a couple of regular/interactive mods who can, as Tsundere Lori put it; “distinguish what thread could potentially create good discussion thread and let it stay in the forum while moving troll/spam threads or basically any thread that will incite pointless arguments and insults to the Recycle Bin.”

This is one of the best ideas so far. Along with expanding the manga subforum to include visual and light novels. heart

I have to disagree, I believe the stickies do work. You rarely see any threads that are sticky related other than the recommendation threads.

However, I think an assistance forum would be nice. Perhaps we should have one for Voice Actors for those who want to discuss voice actors.

You leave the comic discussion out of this kay thanks. They actually tried getting rid of it once and we western comic readers had a fit. I for one don't wish to relive that.
