Once upon a time there were 14 demigods. Their names were Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, Lust, Humility, Love, Kindness, Zeal, Generosity, Temperance, and Chastity. At first, the 14 young demigods cooperated and balanced each other out, keeping the world at harmony. But as time went on, the 14 began to bicker like small children.

Normally, people bickering like small children is just annoying, but not all that harmful. However, with all the power these 14 possessed, the world began to fall out of harmony. Gaians were being overwhelmed by the influence of these demigods. Men were becoming full of greed and harming their neighbors for personal gain. Children were overtaken by Sloth’s influence and refusing to do anything but lie around all day. Some were overtaken by the influence of demigods like Generosity, and gave away everything they owned, leaving themselves in poverty.

After seeing enough of this suffering, the other demigods decided to put an end to the people’s strife. They tricked all of the bickering demigods (and a few beings that associated with them) into a magical tower, and then sealed them away. To make sure that no one ever opened the tower again, the older demigods and gods decided to place a spell on the seal. Unless someone uttered their chosen password, the door to the tower would remain sealed. They picked a word so ridiculous that they reasoned no one would ever think to utter it in front of the tower’s gate.

Once behind the magically sealed stone walls, the demigod’s harmful influence over the Gaians began to fade again. It was as if the magic of the tower was balancing their influence once more. The demigods turned the use of their magic to creating customized mini-dimensions within the castle, to make their time spent incarcerated bearable.

                                ✧✦✧✦✧✦✧✦✧✦✧✦✧✦✧✦

Millennia later, a group of Gaian children were playing far out in the forest. They played hide and seek, and eventually ended up not being able to find themselves. The children were lost and scared. As if things weren’t getting bad enough, it began to rain.

Then the oldest child spotted something looming just above the nearby trees, and pointed it out to his playmates. The group of children reasoned that it might be shelter, so they went to investigate.

After pushing aside vines and branches that looked as though they had been undisturbed for ages, the children came upon the stone tower. However, the door to the tower was cemented shut, and appeared to have some sort of magical seal on it.

They tried pushing. They tried pulling. They tried smashing. They tried looking for keys. They tried sitting on rocks and pulling all the branches near the door.

“Maybe it’s a magic word?” suggested the youngest little girl in the group.

                                “Open Sesame!” shouted one child.

                                “Abracadabra!” another exclaimed.

                                “Please?” Tried the youngest.

They shouted cliché passwords at the door until the rain had drenched them to the bone. “Oh poppycock,” said the oldest in frustration.

As soon as he spoke, the door began to tremble, and the stone gate to the tower swung open before them. Mouths open with surprise and gathering rain, the group of children rushed into the tower.

To their surprise, they found 14 very confused demigods waiting for them.

                                ✧✦✧✦✧✦✧✦✧✦✧✦✧✦✧✦

“Are we being let out?” Greed asked after several moments of awkward silence.

Confused, the eldest child spoke, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

At that moment, other demigods and gods began to show up at the door to the tower, having felt the enormous magic energies of it being opened. One demigod, who looked like he was the patron deity of some leafy vegetable, scolded the children. “Do you have any idea what you’ve unleashed? These are some of the most dangerous spirits in the entire world! We have to get them sealed up again immediately.”

“Now what a minute!” interjected Kindness. “We never meant to hurt anyone!”

“Yes!” exclaimed Zeal. “And we’ve changed! We’re different now, really. We can control ourselves.”

“We’re much more mature now.” Pride boasted. “In fact, we’re the perfect demigods. We could bring real joy to the Gaians. Just give us a chance?”

“We could hold an event, to show our new self-control and good-naturedness!” Generosity added. “We could throw a big gala- a ball! And invite all the Gaians.”

“Please?” Pride looked a bit less smug. “Just one chance?”

All of the other deities agreed. The 14 demigods could have this one chance to show that they could ‘play nice’ and benefit Gaians. And so the 9th Annual Ball came to be.
