Post 3: What not to suggest, part 2: In the Works Index
Post 4: A note about the purpose of this thread.
Posts 5 and Up: Details on Impracticalities and In the Works Issues. See posts 2 and 3 for index.

If you have suggestions for additions to the site, please first take a look at the following suggestion threads. These are the best place for you to put your suggestions.

Item Suggestion Thread (An item is anything that your avatar can wear, or that goes into your home.)
Feature Suggestion Thread (Features are activities, games, and other things that you can do or tools that you can use, such as the marketplace, avatar arena, etc.)
Battle Suggestion Thread (The battle system is currently in development... this thread allows you to discuss what you'd like to see in the battle system once it is released.)

If you have a more complex or detailed suggestion that you feel requires discussion with other users, you can make a thread about it here in the Site Feedback forum. FIRST, however, be sure to read the next two posts for an index of overdone topics about which the Gaia administration has already made a decision one way or the other. Threads on these topics are removed from this forum and recycled.

"Thread Updates"
May 31, 2006: FMI thread revised to include links to the suggestion threads, plus a few other tweaks. Several sections were also updated with more current information.

Impracticalities....
Although many users frequently bring up the features and items listed below, these things will never be implemented on this site. The reasons why usually fall into one of the following categories:
  • Programming Issue: It's not doable from a programming standpoint.
  • Traffic Issue: It would cause the site to crash because of Gaia's enormous userbase (some things aren't doable with high volumes of simultaneous users), and/or be too easily abused.
  • Community Issue: It's something that doesn't mesh well with the majority of Gaia's community.
For more details, see the individual posts on these subjects:

In The Works.....
The Items, features, and other things listed here are, as the section title implies, already 'in the works'. They're either being worked on currently, or are at least on the 'to do' list to be added/implemented at some point.

Any and all threads that say, "I think we should have/should not have" these things will be recycled. If you know that the feature is already being planned, but would like to put forth more specific suggestions about what you'd like to see in it when it does come, that is encouraged for some of these topics and not for others. Please check the list below.

Features
  • Battle System -Any suggestions for the battle system should go into the battle suggestion thread.
  • Personals -If you have any ideas on how this could be implemented without the rampant PG-13 issues that it had before, you're free to suggest them.
  • Mini-Games -You can suggest specific games, but it's better to do it in the Gaia Gaming Forum than here in Site Feedback.
  • Pets -If you have specific suggestions about how you think pets could work on Gaia, you can suggest them.
  • Jobs -If you have ideas on what kinds of 'jobs' there could be, or how this could work, you're free to suggest them.
  • More NPC Stores! If you have suggestions on the looks or contents of a new store, that's okay so long as it doesn't conflict with any of the other restricted topics listed in this thread.
Items
  • Weapons -Please refrain? sweatdrop There've been innumerable suggestions already.
  • Backwings -Again, please refrain. All the popular and most of the unpopular types have been suggested at least 100 times each. whee If you must, they go into the Item Suggestion Thread.
  • Cross-dressing clothing -If there's specific items you'd like to see made male/female, this is better suggested in the Item Suggestion Thread.
  • More Plushies/Instruments -If there's specific plushies or instruments you'd like to see, please suggest them in the Item Suggestion Thread.
  • Tattoos/Piercings/Contacts -Again... for specific suggestions on these, please put them into the Item Suggestion Thread.
  • Wigs -Specific wig requests go into the Item Suggestion Thread as well.

Some notes about the topics listed in this thread...

The overdone topics listed here were originally termed "FMI's" or "Frequently Mentioned Issues" when this thread was created. When the thread was updated in the Summer of 2006, we threw out that particular name for them since too many users were confused by the implications and thought that any topic which came up frequently would be added as an overdone topic and not allowed.

The list of topics was compiled and created as a compromise. The purpose is to allow discussion of valid suggestions of features and items for the site which have a possibility of coming into being (regardless of how often those discussions come up), while curtailing needless discussions about features and items which will either never come to be or are already on the 'to do' list to be added.

No matter how often a particular subject comes up, it won't be added to this list of restricted and overdone topics unless a decision has been made on that issue by the Gaia administration one way or the other.

However, with all of that said, we'd like you to keep in mind that once in a great while, a way of implementing something that was before considered not possible is thought of that makes it possible. (Such as the admins saying that there would not be a word filter... with the thought in mind that there was no way they'd ever have a mandatory filter over the entire site... and then someone coming up with the idea of an optional filter, which we now have.)

Here's hoping you find this thread a source of information and not just a rule-book of what not to post about in Site Feedback. ^^

Backwings Update:6-18-06
Everybody wants wings of some sort, yes, and for most folks, the headbands are not enough - they want wings that come out of the back. As of now fairy wings are available, a donation item called the butterfly mantilla can be worn as butterfly wings, and the demonbow and angelbow (also donation items) have positions which make them look like mini-wings.

Other backwings such as angel wings... in various colors, probably bat wings, and other varieties will be available later on. It's planned to make the angel type wings which are most frequently requested available not as store-bought items, donation items, or rare/uncommon giftboxes, but via the quests system (a planned feature which hasn't been implemented yet).

Very few details are known about the planned quest system, but the admins have made it clear that they wish to make backwings important while making them available to a maximum of users (not just people who have been around for a long time).

Any threads created saying, "We want/should have backwings." will be recycled. If you want to suggest specific wing types to come out later, please post those suggestions in the Item Suggestion Thread.

Weapons/Battlesystem Update:6-18-06
Even more than wings, people want weapons. The lust for battle is overpowering, and more than anything else, folks want some way to bash each other senseless.

Are they coming? Yes, eventually. There will be a whole combat system brought in around the time Gaia moves from alpha to beta, but nobody knows when that's going to happen, just yet. Or if they do know they aren't telling. They did announce recently that the battle system is actually being worked on currently, and gave a small preview of it at FanimeCon 2006.

You can go here: Battle Suggestion Thread to discuss with other users ideas for how the battle system should work.

On the subject of weapons, there are several weapons that have been made available as donation items (demonbow, angelbow, fire and ice whips, sword of Aegis, G-Blade, etc.), but a real weapon store isn't likely to be seen until closer to the Battle System's launch.

Any and all threads that say, "I think we should have weapons/battlesystem" will be recycled. Other discussion about the battle system and ideas on how it should work should, for the most part, be posted in the Battle Suggestion Thread.

However, we won't entirely rule out the possibility of someone making a thread to discuss something about the battle system that is already planned... given that there are not too many already existing topics about the battle system feature.

For weapon suggestions, since innumerable suggestions on weapon types have already been made, it's likely that most threads asking for specific weapon types will also be recycled.

Items from Movies, Games, and other Copyrighted Media (Update: 6-30-05)
"We need GI's like they have in DBZ!!! And Lightsabres with Jedi Outfits! Oh, and Harry Potter outfits too!" We've all either seen suggestions like these hundreds of times, or been the ones to make the suggestions. Well, the thing that comes up just about every time someone makes a suggestion like this is, "They can't make that, it's copyrighted!"

Before anything else is said, please consider how many of the items you've seen around Gaia resemble items from anime, manga, movies, games, TV shows, or other popular media. If you said none, then you're definitely just not aware of it. Many of Gaia's current items are very similar to popular clothing and items from various media.

Obviously, exact replicas of copyrighted clothing and items cannot be created for Gaia. However, it's not infrequent that we get clothing or items that have only small differences, the same way that you'll find generic brands of various name-brand items in a grocery store.

So, you want to suggest items from movies, games, anime, and other copyrighted media? You can! You'll probably never get exact replicas of them, but you never know when we might get a Gaia version of something.

To clarify, for the forum regulars: this means that pointing out to someone that they are suggesting a copyrighted item and that an exact duplicate cannot be made is completely unneccessary and irrelevant to the suggestion.

The site administrators are not going to create any items that would involve them in copyright infringement, however, neither do they expect every user on Gaia to be familiar with copyright laws. Nor is having knowledge and understanding of copyright information a requirement to posting suggestions in the Site Feedback forum.

Keeping this in mind, suggestions about items of this type will NOT be recycled unless they also fall under a different FMI category.

Users are also requested to NOT reply to these threads with any sort of deterrent simply because someone doesn't specify a 'similar' or 'like' item instead of suggesting an actual copyrighted item.

On mass limited edition item re-releases:

Brief Summary: (For those who don't want to read all the text below.)
  • Limited edition items are limited for a reason and serve a purpose within Gaia's economy and community. Re-releasing them on a mass basis is not an option.

We know, we know, you've gone over to GAC or seen some truly spectacular item. With a shock you realize that it is the one thing that you truly need to complete your avatar. Then you realize that it is a donation item and that it is next to if not impossible for you to get.

However, you still want it. The logical solution seems to be that re-releasing the items would get you your dream item. This has been suggested multiple ways, via new stores, releasing the same item in a different donation letter, and a dozen other ways.

In the matter of donation items though, the admins have vowed that they will never have a mass re-release donation items. Not because it wouldn't be 'fair', not because they're interested in spiting your dreams. Because donation items, as they are, are an integral part of the site.

Event and donation items are a gift from the admins of the site to the users, something special and unique and something which is wholly and utterly a part of the Gaia Community. You all know that.

What you may not be so familiar with is that donation items especially, as limited edition items, play a very important role in Gaia's economy and community. The existence of limited edition items within Gaia gives users a challenge and also shapes many aspects of the community.

Limited edition items give users a reason to make a career out of playing the Exchange to increase their gold earnings. They give users a reason to quest, to draw fabulous art in exchange for high sums of gold, cute and neat art for lesser sums of gold. Limited edition items are also rather like Gaia's version of a stock exchange and are often used as investments.

Before those reading this scream, "HYPORCRITES! You re-released the G-pin and its price fell drastically!!" Just remember to take note of the following: #1 It was an event item, not a donation item. #2 This is a roleplaying site and the item happened to have plot significance. It was part of an NPC event/plot where the item was handed out both times.

Any/All threads asking for mass re-releases of limited edition items will be recycled. And yes, releasing it again as a donation item is considered a mass re-release.

Prices of Limited Edition items:

Brief Summary: (For those who don't want to read all the text below.)
  • Limited edition item prices are controlled by the users, and based entirely on supply and demand.

So now that you understand why there will not be mass re-releases of older donation items, nor likely for most event items, you're still thinking, "But they're impossible to get!"

Here's the thing.... Gaia staff does not exercise any control whatsoever over the prices of limited edition items. If the going rate on something is high, it's because there actually are users around with that much gold or value in items who are buying them at those prices.

Do note that Gaia Staff does not officially endorse any particular price guide though, or guarantee that the 'values' listed therein are entirely accurate. The price guides, like the prices themselves, are controlled entirely by the Gaia users.

Any/All threads complaining about prices of items (limited or common, uncommon, etc..) will be recycled.

I love you grandpa.

Prices of Commons (Items sold in NPC stores):

Brief Summary: (For those who don't want to read all the text below.)
  • C) Gaia's economy and community is based on earning by putting effort into the site and community. Effort -is- required, and the more effort you put in, the more you earn.

Well what about the common items? Why are some of those so expensive? Obviously Gaia staff does control the prices of the items sold in the NPC stores. However, if you consider it objectively, there are a lot of common items available for 500-700 gold or less. Most users are able to get themselves a basic outfit within less than a week of joining the site. As you're on the site longer, you work your way up to the more pricey items and the more complex outfits. It is, as will be discussed in more detail in the following section on gold gain, part of the challenge of the Gaia experience. Want the cool outfits rather than the more basic clothing? You need to hang around for a while and build up your assets to get them.

Any/All threads complaining about prices of items (limited or common, uncommon, etc..) will be recycled.

I love you grandpa.
Gold gain is too hard:

Brief Summary: (For those who don't want to read all the text below.)
  • C) Gaia's economy and community is based on earning by putting effort into the site and community. Effort -is- required, and the more effort you put in, the more you earn.

As Gaia has more and more items... gold actually has become a bit easier to gain. Additionally, as new features are added, there are additional and differing ways to earn gold. However, like limited edition items, the challenge of getting enough gold to buy what you want is a very integral part of the Gaia economy and community.

Since there is no 'easy' way to earn a lot of gold without putting quite a bit of effort and time into it, a user must participate in various aspects of the community in order to earn the gold they want for those coveted items.

The earning of gold and spending of it is, aside from user communication through the forums, what ties everything in the site together. A user joins, and immediately they want to customize their avatar. In order to do so, they need to find activities on the site that they can participate in. Whether they decide to post in the forums, buy/sell in the exchange or the marketplace, draw art and sell it to other Gaians for gold, buy a pole and go fishing, or any other way, participation is really required in order to earn the gold that enables you to customize your avatar.

It's part of the game and experience that is Gaia that you choose your own path to gaining the items you want and need to express yourself through your avatar. No matter what you do though, site participation is definitely required, and more participation is required for getting the more expensive items. Along the way, you hopefully have fun too.

Any/All threads saying that gold gain is too hard/make gold easier to gain will be recycled.

Crossdressing Update:6-18-06
Some girls just want to wear the boxer shorts or the trenchcoats. Some guys want to wear the Nightmare Bustier.

Well, how about it? The admins have said that at some point more items will be made unisex. In recent updates, they have made strides towards making both some hairstyles and some previously male-only or female-only items unisex as well.

The problem is, the basic male body and the basic female body have somewhat different shapes and postures. The graphics that make up male clothing will not fit well on the female avatar, and vice-versa. In order for both sexes to wear a given item, it must fit in such a way that there is virtually no difference between how it works for male and female avatars (like hats, for instance), or two sets of graphics must be made for the item(s) - The Nightmare Boots, for instance, fit both male and female characters, though they look significantly different on each gender.

That's a lot of work, and there's constantly more and more demand for new items in general, let alone unisex items. Any item might go unisex in the future - please understand, however, that the development team already has a massive amount of work on their schedules, so nothing will happen overnight.

At the recent Fanime 2006 convention, this subject came up as well, and VO asked for patience... as he's currently re-doing many of the already existing items already in order fix many of the existing layering issues we currently have. More male and female only items will be made available to the other sex as time goes on, and most of the new ones that come out are already unisex. It'll just take some time.

All topics asking for crossdressing will be recycled. You are, however, free to make suggestions in the Item Suggestion Thread as to which items/types of items you'd like to see made available to both sexes.

Personals Update:3-15-05
You want the personals back? This has been on the list ever since the personals were closed. The personals, or something like them, will return. It may not, however, be the highest priority on the list, so there may be a bit more waiting to do for this. It IS coming though.

All topics asking for the return of the personals, or saying that they don't want the personals to come back will be recycled. On the off chance that you'd like to discuss the practicalities of how the personals could be re-implemented without the rampant cyber issues that they had previously, we'll allow that (again) so long as there are not too many already existing topics on the same subject.

Pets Update: 5-12-05
Pets pets pets!! This is a hot debate that's been going on for a long time. You think pets would be a cool addition to Gaia's avatar system? Good news... pets are planned to eventually be an additional feature. You hate that news because you don't want to see Gaia turn into another Neopets site? No details have been released on this planned feature, but this might help soothe your fears:

"L0cke"
We wont be anything like neopets~! We understand that we have a very different crowd from the neopets community and we will cater the pet system to our audience, not theirs.

All topics asking for pets to be on the site, or asking for pets to NOT be on the site, will be recycled. Topics discussing possible ways of implementing this feature are still allowed, provided (as always), that there are not too many already existing threads on that topic.

I love you grandpa.
Plushies/Instruments Update: 6-18-06
Plushies have been a suggestion in the Suggestion Thread for a long long time, and when the March 2005 donation letter was released, with the first ever plushie item (Kiki Kitty Plushie), it was an immediate hit. Since then, more plushies has been an extremely frequent suggestion. Currently all plushies are donation items. We have not only the Kiki, but the Coco, the Yeti, and Mochi the Puppy (though some might not count Mochi as a plushie). There will continue to be more plushies released here and there.

Instruments have been planned for a long long time, as is evidenced by the fact that there's a building on one of the maps with a musical symbol on it. Everyone wants more now that the May 2005 donation letter released the Guitar of Angellus and the Guitar of Demona. More are coming!

All topics asking for more plushies or instruments will be recycled. If you have suggestions on specific plushies or instruments you'd like to see in Gaia, please make them in the Item Suggestion Thread.

I love you grandpa.
