Okay so heres the basic story

I went to install Heros 3 and my Cd drive wasnt acting right, so my dad ( who has worked on computers for 20+ years ) swapped my Cd drive with his, after that my computer went downhill, and fast. he messed around with it for a little and like a million of my files were unable to be read, after that it started giving me a " STOP: c0000218 {Registery File Failure} the registry cannot load the hive (file):
SystemRootSystem32ConfigSAM
or its log ot alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance."

Thats what happens now when i boot up my computer. Ugh, i cant lose my stuff but if it needs wiped, i guess it needs wiped. Any ideas what it could be?

I think your HDD is dying. Back it up and replace ASAP. If you have trouble recovering files you might could try SpinRite but it will cost you about $90.

kk but the thing is is i cant even view anything on my hardrive even when we plugged it into my dads computer, and it only happened after we swapped the Cd drives my computer was fine all today and eery day that ive used it ever. thats why i find it odd.

that's not good...SAM is where the passwords and that riff-raff is stored.....you may need to do a restore install.

Also he cant even get to the DOS prompt to do a restorefrom an earlier date

Either the drive is failing (slash failed) or the file system is corrupt for some reason (other than a hard drive failure). I would suspect that former as for a file system to crash something would generally need to be acting upon it, such as a virus of some kind.

You could try a "chkdsk /r" from the Windows Recovery Console (after booting to the reinstall cd) to detect/isolate bad sectors on the drive, but I think you might be screwed. neutral

if you can resize your active drive while using it
I'll boil your hard drive and have it with a side of fries

Let me tell you something in plain english that the others are trying to get through to you.

Your harddrive. Is dying.
That is why you cannot get it to work with anything.
It is kicking the bucket.
It's about to be pushing up daisies.

You can try to use a program, or send it to a company to get the data off it, but I'm unaware of any free ways to do that.

A format will not help if the harddrive is dying. You will need a new one. I'm sure since your dad knows enough to swap optical drives out that he can get you a new harddrive installed and setup.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you replace Hardwares, Windows have a hard time configuring itself to the new Hardware. ><

it has a biotch of a time, you need to manually edit the drivers and crap im preety sure.

Not with an optical drive. Windows doesn't even need to reboot to install that.

I suspect Malware is the cause!

This simply does not happen when you change an optical hardware drive!

Post a HiJackThis log so i can take a look at whats running on your system!

Download a copy of HijackThis and save it to your desktop in a folder.
Do a scan and save the HijackThis logfile. Do not remove anything.
Post your log file here.
