Alright, since there are plenty of topics out there complaining about Bad Grammar, Spelling, Vampires, Cliches, Mary-Sues, and Vampires, I would like to ask the complementing question.

What DO you like?

What do you like to read about?
What type of character do you enjoy?
What genre's your favorite?

So instead of people reading through and comparing their characters to the negative stuff, and run away crying because a trait of one of their characters matches something someone swore down, I'd like to see what people like instead.

You don't have to answer the questions I asked as they were hypothetical, but please tell me and everyone what you do like to read.

The minimum rules:

No bashing, please. This thread is meant to support. If you hate vampires, there are at least half a dozen other threads dedicated to it.

Don't flame other people for liking something you don't agree with.

And whatever other rules that common sense dictates you should listen to.

I tend to like novels with talking animals. Like the Redwall series (only the first three books), David Clement Davies' Fire Bringer, and the amazing+wonderful+superb Watership Down. Among others whee When I was little, I liked Stellaluna and Verdi. I have not outgrown good talking animal books, and I think I could try my hand at writing one someday.

Androgynes, musicians, true platonic relationships (think Sam and Frodo), ghosts, Victorian gentlemen, Victorian detectives, people with archaic jobs, poetic ideas as part of the plot, vaguely-defined but distinctly separate otherworlds, breaking the 4th wall.

True that, Mytho ;D Deer are now officially awesome.

I'm starting to like poetry. Not modern poetry, but the old stuff from England, spanning from 1500s to 1900s. I read it mostly for its imagery, because I currently cannot understand any sort of meter rolleyes LOL! Like, Wordworth, Coleridge, Tennyson, the Brownings, Yeats, and T. S. Eliot.

I don't understand what Eliot is talking about yet crying But "What the Thunder Said" in The Waste Land is so flippin' sweet. Love the imagery there. Very powerful.

I like bittersweet/modern faerie-tales.
Those ones where the main character gets something close to what they wanted, but the whole mood of the book ends up changing because some terrible event happens.
Or something. Just think "Holly Black."

Those and Harry Potter are what make up my entire book collection.

And to be quite honest, I like vampires.
I've always liked vampires. Ever since I was little.
Which is why I'm not ashamed at all to say I enjoy the Twilight series.
Even though it gets really REALLY repetitive. New Moon is my favorite (although most of the other fans hated it), and I think it's probably because Edward is absent throughout most of it.
Haha.

My mother used to recite "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" to me and my siblings and explain what all of it meant to entertain us on long car rides.

There are not many still-alive-today-and-under-the-age-of-50 "modern" poets. Some, yes. Not many.

Might I suggest -- Louis Untermeyer, Adrienne Rich, Theodore Roethke, Walter de la Mare, James Russell Lowell, and GK Chesterton? And for the best of all and most stunning imagery... Conrad Aiken.

Actually... if you want an anthology to just pluck stuff out of at random, try "Modern American/Modern British Poetry", edited by Louis Untermeyer. You can get the entire text of both anthologies online for free here:

I like pretty much everything. My favorite type of story is a romance with some element of fantasy or sci-fi to it. I like werewolves, but I love vampires. I liked Blood and Chocolate but I love the Twilight series and Anne Rice's stories.

I like stories about other planets, but they have to have some element of reality in them. For example, I like Anne McCaffrey's work. When it comes to poetry, I like some things (that I understand) from real poets. But my favorite "poetry" is by Ellen Hopkins because it tells a story.

Easy to read things. Stories that draw you into them within the first page rather than after the third chapter.

I admit, I enjoy reading about vampires but prefer a decent plot line and deep characters.

Recently, I've turned my eyes towards cyberpunk and found that rather enjoyable.

I'm partial to nineteenth century Russian lit, though I'm not huge on Tolstoy.

I'll read anything that catches my eye. And things usually catch my eye by the title, the cover art, and the first few sentences of the book.

What I like depends on what mood I'm in. If I'm feeling philisophic, then something that provokes philisophic thought. Government amuses me, as does politics (in real life at times it gets grating and I just get insanely annoyed, especially at any overt stupidity, but in fiction or even non-fiction it's sweet almost all the time. You know, unless it's crap to begin with). Sometimes my mind's blown up to pieces and I like things easy to understand and escapest. Sometimes I just like things that explore different cultures, whether real or made up. Sociology and psychollogy are sweet. That's all very vague... but oh well.

I love fantasy, if not the overtly generic variety (haha), and I love elves that don't suck. I don't love vampires, but they're tolorable. I can be okay with anything as long as makes sense.

Basically, anything that doesn't suck too much, I can read and be happy.

Murder, hitmen, espionage, fantasy, science fiction, ghosts, steampunk, forgotten mythologies, historical fiction, the shinsengumi, vampire HUNTERS, alternate universes, viruses and GENGHIS KHAN ********.

Seriously, just got done with Conn Iggulden's book Genghis: Birth of an Empire. Almost shat a brick. Amazing book. The fact that 95% of it is totally true makes it even more cool.

Take a peek through American Psycho. One of the best books out there. It has yuppies, cocaine, random murder, sex and a twisted ending that only Chuck Palahnuik could have seen coming.

Battle Royale is pretty badass too. Your typical government-conspiracy thing, but with Japanese middle schoolers killing each other before a time limit so that one will survive and "win." It's pure fun.

Battle Royale had such an effect on me that the first day I got it, I drove home from work and started reading it. I was tired, so I stopped and took a nap and had a dream about being in the same type of game. I was running around ambushing my friends and former classmates stealing their weapons and killing them. It was hilarious.

Iggulden deserves kudos for that book. It was AWESOME. I got the sequel and am currently reading it. >:3
