Hi everyone,
We recently released the Find Friends feature, which (we hope) makes it a lot easier to find your friends on Gaia. Since this is the first time we've tried something like this, we'd love to hear your feedback.
How could we improve the feature? Can you think of any ways to make it easier or more useful? Have you run into any bugs? If so, please let us know what happened. It would be very useful if you included the following info:
-Your browser type/version (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc). -Which email service you're importing from, if applicable Thanks! Some responses from WonderSloth (the dev who worked on Find Friends): Q: Someone can find my email address in the Find Friends search? But I don't want to be found A: Opt-out of the find friends search. HowTo Opt-out of the Find Friends Search You are able to opt-out of the Find Friends search. If you would like to do that goto My Gaia then goto Account. Once you've reached that page scroll down to the Friendslist box. The second option there is an option to opt-out of being found in the find friends search. Q: No AIM or AOL support? A: As of right now we don't have AOL/AIM support. We use third party tool that does support AOL/AIM but it's not working yet. (Their bad). Sorry for lack of support right now. I will have it out as soon as that AOL/AIM actually works. Q: Hotmail / MSN support? Here's what pacifisticuffs a fellow dev has done. "pacifisticuffs" For those of you using Hotmail -- first off, stop it. Hotmail's horrible. Go make a Gmail account. razz Second, you can still use the Find a Friend feature, but you'll have to work a little to do it. Hotmail has an option to allow you to export your contacts as a comma-separated list. 1. Go to Contacts 2. Click on Options 3. Select Export Contacts 4. Click the Export Contacts button 5. Save the file to your desktop 6. Open the file in a text editor, like Notepad 7. Remove everything that isn't an email address 8. Make sure each address is separated by a comma 9. Copy and paste the list into the Find a Friend page where it says Friend Email 10. Done (This is done much easier through something like Excel, if you have that available) I know, it sucks and it's a lot of steps, but until Wondersloth is able to get an API for importing your Hotmail contacts, that's the best option. Now, for those of you complaining about difficulty reading the friends list, Wondersloth has said he's working on getting some sort of graphic for online/offline status. But in the meantime, have you noticed the very helpfully-labeled links, Online and Offline? mrgreen Now the reason why we don't support Hotmail/MSN out of the box? Well it's because we use a 3rd party tool called plaxo to import your contacts. Plaxo doesn't support Hotmail/MSN so unfortunately, for now, we don't have that support. Oh! The Friendslist page has been changed back. It now has the original smiley's. |
