Updated 5/10: Answered some more questions, edits below.
Updated 5/9: This is now live! It defaults to "show whitelisted images," but you can go to your account settings and set it to anything that you prefer. We also added Tektek back onto the whitelist. ~pan I know a bunch of people have been asking when we're going to allow arbitrary images in posts again. We had hoped to have this implemented last weekend, but it turned out to be a wee bit more complicated. It is in QA, and I think at this point that this will be deployed early next week, but I wanted to discuss what we were going to do and open up the thread for questions/comments. Most importantly, we apologize for the inconvenience -- we know that this is really a pain for artists, store owners, breedables, and whatnot. We want images back on as much as you do. What Problem Are We Solving? There are two problems we are trying to solve. - people spamming gore/porn in forums/PMs - password protected images causing spurious authentication dialogs when viewing threads How Are We Solving It? So, what we're going to do for now is give users an option in their account settings that allows you to pick on of the following: - show all images - show whitelisted images - show no images Currently on the "whitelist" are photobucket.com and deviantart.com. (Flickr.com was on the list but was taken out because it is possible to construct legal Flickr URLs that are impossible to report. Tektek was on the list but they have a redirect facility, so it led us into the same problem we had before.) If you have picked "whitelisted" or "no images," then on every post you'll see a "show images" option. If you click this, every image in the message will be shown in original form -- this will work much like Gmail's "show images" option. We may also add an option to show all images in the entire thread. Does This Solve The Problem? We hope it makes it substantially better; it solves the problem and gives the user control over what they see. This, in combination with CAPTCHA and improved moderator tools, should make your forum browsing experience more enjoyable. Edits below. Can we have our own whitelist? Cool idea, but not for now; there's a single global whitelist. Can we add <some site> to the whitelist? We are fine with adding sites to the whitelist, but it should really be a) a fairly popular site with b) a well-established moderation policy. My Tektek rando-sigs don't work! Yah, unfortunately that's the reason we had to disable Tektek in the first place. The random sigs allow you to link to any image, including images that are not on the whitelist. As a result, we can't treat the random signatures as whitelisted images. Why don't you enable all images by default!? We can't enable all images by default because it brings us back to the original problem: password protected images that are used to phish users. Your comments/questions are welcomed below. |
