REVIEW OF THE WEEK

BY:Someone

Introduction: Hello fellow Gaia users!Lost Magic is a role-playing game that starts well and gets deeper and better as you play it.

http://www.pockett.net/jeu_video/NintendoDS/Taito/Lost_Magic/lm_art.jpg

The Good
• Excellent controls   Clean, colorful visuals   Enjoyable offline multiplayer duels

The Bad
• Micromanaging monster movement   Laggy online play

The Nintendo DS stylus has performed many different functions in its relatively short life, ranging from the inspired to the impractical. In LostMagic, an action role-playing game from Taito, you get to use your stylus both as a magic wand and as a tool for commanding units on real-time strategy battlefields. LostMagic's varied use of the stylus is undoubtedly one of its strongest features, and the good news is that the game backs up its great control system with an engaging, story-driven adventure mode; good multiplayer support; clean, colorful visuals; a decent soundtrack; and loads of cool monsters that you can choose to kill or capture in every level.

In LostMagic, you assume the role of a young mage named Isaac who sets out to find the father that he hasn't seen in years and winds up with the fate of the whole world resting on his shoulders. The storyline has plenty of interesting twists and turns, and although Isaac's noncombat interactions with other characters are mostly limited to linear conversations, they're an interesting bunch and you never really know who you can trust. Many of the other mages that you encounter in the game, for example, spend parts of the game under the influence of the evil Diva of Twilight, and the only way for you to free them from her spell is to defeat them in battle.

Real-time battles are what LostMagic is all about--you don't walk around towns and talk to people, you don't wander aimlessly around a world map hoping to avoid random encounters, and you certainly don't waste any time scouring areas for clues as to what you're supposed to do next. You fight battles, you move between key locations on the world map instantly, you fight more battles, and you occasionally get a dose of storyline via brief and mostly linear conversations that Isaac has with other characters. LostMagic deals with exploration and conversation in such a way that neither can really be considered gameplay features, which is just fine, because the last thing you want is to get bogged down with that stuff in between the game's enjoyable and surprisingly varied battles.

At the start of your adventure, you have access to only a handful of spells, including fireball and ice-shard projectiles, as well as the ability to heal yourself. There are six schools of magic in the game, which can be divided up into three pairs that are particularly effective when used against each other: fire versus water, light versus dark, and earth versus wind. Most of the monsters that you'll be battling are attuned to one of the six elements, and you can generally tell which one it is by paying attention to what color they are. Water monsters are blue for the most part, for example, while earth monsters are brown and light monsters are yellow. Choosing the right spells for the job is crucial when attempting to kill monsters, but the real challenge comes when you decide that you want to catch one so that you can choose to have it fight alongside you in subsequent engagements.

http://images.eurogamer.net/assets/articles/a/6/4/2/8/5/a_med_piff.jpg

To catch a monster in LostMagic, you have to beat it to within a pixel of its life and then cast a trap spell in its vicinity. If the trap succeeds, you'll add the monster (a pair or a trio of them, in fact) to your roster, which has room for almost 70 different types. Your mission objectives in LostMagic invariably involve killing all of the monsters on a level, protecting villagers while killing all of the monsters on a level, or killing a bunch of monsters en route to a battle with a rival mage. Sounds simple right? Wrong. Succeeding in many of the game's levels--which are played against some pretty tight time limits--requires not only mad stylus spell-casting skills, but also good strategic thinking and, in many cases, the right monsters at your side. Choosing monsters that are attuned to an element that works well against your enemies is one of the most obvious examples of this, but you'll also find that certain levels are a lot easier if you have minions that can fly, fire projectiles, or move quickly. Furthermore, you'll find items that you can use to buff monsters' abilities as you progress through the game, and these can make a huge difference when used wisely.
Controlling all of the monsters under your command is pretty simple. You use the stylus to click on or drag a circle around the monsters that you want to move, and then you touch the area that you want them to move to. Your monsters will engage enemies that come within range automatically, and their only real failing is their complete inability to navigate corners and obstacles without some degree of micromanagement. You start the majority of the battles alongside your chosen monsters, and aside from the monsters that you occasionally leave behind to block up enemy-spawning portals, you can pretty much keep them close for the entire level--healing them with your magic as necessary. Some of the more challenging levels force you to split up your winning team, though, and they even go so far as to start you at opposite ends of the map, which is when having to manage your monsters every move gets problematic.

LostMagic, then, is a game that combines some of the best features of action RPGs and real-time strategy games, and then throws a Pokèmon-style monster collection and a moves (ok, spells) list that's comparable to those of any fighting game into the mix. The result is a thoroughly enjoyable game that, although not without a few flaws and frustrations, starts well and simply gets deeper and better as you spend more time with it.

About the Nintendo DS

The Nintendo DS is a dual-screen handheld gaming system developed, manufactured, and published by Nintendo. The name "DS" is short for Dual Screen, although Nintendo has also promotionally said it also represents Developer's System, due to Nintendo's claim of the incredible ease of developing games for the handheld. Before it was announced at Nintendo's E3 2004 press conference, the Nintendo DS went by the code name of Nitro.

The purpose of the Nintendo DS is to not only compete with the Sony PSP, but to bring innovations to the world of gaming. For the Nintendo DS features voice recognition and input, a touch screen interface, two screens, WiFi compatability, and a clam shell design all in one.

The Nintendo DS is one of the fastest selling handhelds of all time, currently ahead of the Sony PSP in worldwide sales. The logo of the Nintendo DS is two squares stacked upon each other vertically. (See site favicon, also known as URL Image.) The Nintendo DS has many slogans such as "Touch", "Touch Me", "Touch!", and "Touching is Good".

Metroid Prime Hunter Communicaton

Battle Communication

Battle Communication is the art of communicating whilst in the heat of battle. It can be essential to teams, and it can help you with your strategies; by changing plans, forming new strategies, or even alerting your partner. This section is dedicated to helping you become a master at Battle Communication.

First off, we’ll start like we did in the Abbreviations section; a list of things you can do that can mean different commands. (Courtesy of INDIGNATIONJUDGEMENT.)

Surrender: Fire power beam upwards continuously until other player does the same. Then face them and see if they nod when you do. If they do, you've truce'd them.

Team: Fire power beam at your own feet and hope that someone else comes and does the same thing before you get Imp'd in the head. Again, nod afterwards. If they shake their head "No", you'd better get the heck away from them.

Betray: Imp someone in the head after firing Power Beam shots upwards.

"Go there": Fire an Imperialist (or power beam/missiles) at the place where you want someone to go, and then start heading there yourself.

"Follow me": After calling a Truce, fire a "go there" shot and keep firing until they start following you. If they don't, fire at the spot, turn around, and nod at them. o_O

"I hate you": Kill the person. Twice. In a row.

"Whoops, I didn't mean to kill you!": Suicide with missiles, or let them kill you.

"Let's glitch!": Kill someone 6 times before offering to team with them. If they accept the surrender/team, kill them a seventh time.

"Let's go get the other team's octolith!": Go get the octolith yourself.

Make sure your partner knows these well; it’s handy to have them in front of you during a match. Also, make sure you and your partner are looking back at each other every now and then, looking for signs. You should designate one as the leader, or the one who gives out the commands.

Nintendo DS Multiplayer Modes

Back at E3 2004, Reggie FIls-Aime promised online gameplay possibilities with the Nintendo DS at its unveiling. However, there was much doubt that Nintendo's plans would continue, because of their total disregard for Nintendo GameCube's online capabilities.

At the 2005 Game Developer's Conference, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata confirmed that the "Nintendo WiFi Connection" is well under way in development.

After less than a year after the system's release, the Nintendo WiFi Connection launched in the United Stateson November 14, 2005.

There is much confusion surrounding the game's multiplayer modes. Popular magazines list the local wireless multiplayer mode as "WiFi", when it's really not. That is just local wireless play.

The other multiplayer mode, as you know, is truly WiFi; The Nintendo WiFi Connection. The only thing you need to connect is a DS, a Nintendo WiFi Connection-compatible game, and a wireless router or USB adapter with a brodbad internet connection.

WiFi / Hotspots

WiFi, or Wireless Fidelidy, is basically wireless internet.

Anywhere where there is a wireless router offering a connection, there is a hotspot. "Hotspot" is just a term used to say "WiFi is offered in this area". Therefore, you must be in a hotspot to play on the Nintendo WiFi Connection.

Routers and the USB Adapter

Wireless routers take an internet connection and split it up into radio waves that your DS can communicate with internet servers with. (This also works with PCs with wireless network cards). The USB adapter does the same, but only works with the Nintendo DS and Wii.Routers vs. USB Adapter

Using Routers
Pros:
- Can be used with computers
- Can have more DSes connected than the USB adapter
Cons:
- Ranges from $37 to well into the hundreds.
- You need to program your DS to communicate with it
- Possibly big, bulky

Using the USB Adapter ($34.99)
Pros:
- Possibly cheaper than router
- No setup to play online (turn on the DS and play)
- Small, can take it anywhere easily
Cons:
- Can only be used with Windows XP.
- Only 5 DSes can connect at one time.
- Can't be used to connect computers to a network

Which one do I recommend? Well, that's up to you, and how each one fits your situation!

PLEASE NOTE: Sometimes routers change versions without any notification, and therefore may or may not become compatible with the WFC. Be sure to check out nintendowifi.com's list of supported routers frequently for the most detailed information. This information was relayed to me by a Customer Service Rep at NOA HQ in Redmond, WA during a call.

Encrypted Networks and Your DS

The DS supports only WEP Encryption. Therefore, you will need to enter your WEP key into the DS.

To find your WEP key, (in most routers), you need to type the router's IP address into a browser and there you can modify and find its settings, including the WEP key.

Typical Wireless Network

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What do I need to buy to play online?
A. All you need is an online-compatible game. But you also need brodband internet
and a 802.11b or 802.11g wireless router.

Q. Can I play a game online against someone in another country?
A. Yes, if you are both connected and in the same game. There is no region differences
with any component of the Nintendo DS, excluding different power supplies.

Q. Does DSL service count as brodband internet?
A. Yes

Q. How will you get through a firewall/password-protected internet connection?
A. Yes, WEP Encryption is supported. Firewalls will need to be configured to allow your DS access.

Q. If I went to a store right now and bought a DS and brought it to Starbucks,
would I be able to play online?
A. Not unless you have a online ds game!

Q. Will I get cancer from the wireless?
A. No, WiFi uses Radio Frequency signals, which don't harm us humans.
(Same as the DS's LAN play, WaveBird wireless controllers, cell phones, etc.)

Q. What if I have 56k and/or don't have a wireless router?
A. You can go to www.wififreespot.com to seach your state for free WiFi
hotspots offered (US only)... Or you can go to a friend's house with WiFi and play.

Q. Will I need to connect my router DS?
A. Nope, there is nothing to connect besides the router to the computer + modem, unless you get the USB adapter.

Q. Where is my WEP key?
A. In most routers, you can find this by entering your router's IP addrsess into a browser and accessing its settings.

Q. Does my friend code change between games?
A. Yes, every game that you have will assign you a different friend code when you connect for the first time.

Friend Codes....?

Friend codes are the way you can play online with your friends. They are unique, 12-digit numbers assigned to you the first time you connect with a game. In order for you and someone to be friends, you both need to have each other's friend codes (ala "Tracking Users" on GameSpot).
