"Nothing is true . . .

I'm not 100% sure on this . . . In the story I want to write -- which takes place in the Middle East during the Third Crusade -- I will have some Crusaders popping up, though I don't have it planned (this is just a rough idea). Anyway, I am wondering what types of names (both given and surname) the French and English had during this time, or if names have not changed at all during the past 900 years.

Um, sorry if that wasn't a very clear question. sweatdrop
. . . Everything is permitted."

well, surnames for the most part were the person's trade. at least if they were of peasant decent. Such as William Smith. he was a blacksmith by trade. or Jack Fletcher. a fletcher (made arrows). the crusaders where knights and so their surnames may have been peasant-trade names, but they may have chosen, at knighthood, to get a new one. like Braveheart or Lionbeard. or whatever fitted their fighting style or personatlity.

i'm not 100% sure that that's what the french did as well, but they most likely did. Their names would have been French, and not enlish. i would suggest websites that catagorize each name into its origin. such as 20000names.com (i think that's what its called) or like whatsbehindthename.com (again, i think). or just simply go to google and look around.

hope that helps!

Hey, I was just wondering whats the perfect name for a villian who is an insane psychopath, who kills everybody who fails him, toys with peoples friends and family, and will kill even those close to him to get what he wants. He's a blood sucking demon and is afraid of death

How about a relatively normal name that you wouldn't expect for a villain like your character? I am partial to Nathaniel or Bartholomew. =o

ONLYTONI is right, what is the context? What time/location does your story take place, and what kinds of names do your other characters have? Once you figure that out, give him a standard name for the setting. People are born evil, and unless his family was deranged they probably wouldn't give him an intentionally odd name.

Also do you mean demon literally? You could try a biblical name in that case I suppose. Finally, your demons are mortal?

Whenever I'm naming a character of mine, I usually find a name to reflect their personalities. A good website to find names is 20,000 Names. It's got a huge amount of different names from all over the world.

Your advice is really convincing. I, myself, am writing a fantasy book. My profile has a small description, an excerpt, you can call it, of my book. I will heed your advice, but I have my own ways of thinking of names for my characters. Thank you very much indeed.

My names usualy just come to me. Since all my characters are based off of people I know, I typicaly use something that suits them. For example, I have a friend, who I have 3 different characters based off of. One is Sky Dancer, which is the tanslation of her Cherokee name, Sadiquah, which was one of her online names, and Saphira, one of my nicknames for her.

A woman named Victoria Crawford is born to Timothy and Claire in an average neighborhood. She is 'transported' (haven't worked that detail out yet) to another world named Eversong (which I like how it LOOKS, but I'm not to keen on the sound of it.)

I would very much like some input on the names (if you don't like them, that's fine with me. I'm here to find out what I need to change.)

The sample names I've got in my notes are for four different races of people in Eversong.
Light Elves:
Danica, Ember, Mayra, and Galahad, Jachai, and Lachlan.
Dark Elves:
Ixtli, Xola, Zrifa and Zwi, Dhiren, and Camaxtli (these are all real names that I pulled off a baby-name site.)
Faeries:
Fwaeip, Gaenr, Shiane, and Groamn, Zeagl, and Kevaer. (Faye, Jean, and Shawna, Graham for the first few as pronunciations. The last two are easy to say.)

and a special race of 'winged people' who, surprisingly, have wings.
Aeryn, Kellyn, Pennelyn, and Owlin (pronounced Owen), Eryx, and Dwyn.

So if I were to say that Victoria is friends with Daemyn and Jonas, what connection to race would you be able to make from them?

Names with meaningful origins annoy me. It's a bit too prophetic on their parents' part for my taste. I prefer amalgamations of bits of names I know and names I like the sound of from BehindTheName.com to get things like Kurtis Sewell. Kurtis Sewell, DDS, specialist in dentistry for superheroes with invulnerability extending to the bacteria and other buildups on their teeth, and by no coincidence, secret identity of a supervillain.

Yeah. If his name has any relevance to his profession or personality, let me know so I can change it to be unrelated.

Fun fact! Citing the environmental risk of disposing of hookers conventionally in landfills, California was the first state to require special disposal bins near every drain pipe. Improperly disposing of a hooker can result in a several hundred dollar citation.

I really want these!

The thing is that all names have some kind of meaning, and applied in a style somewhat like wishful thinking, of course you want your son/daughter to be beautiful/wise/loyal, doesn't mean it's going to be accurate though...

For the basic stuff it's probably not worth changing it though, there's always some chance they're going to match the name, it happens in real life too. If you didn't mean to do it and you're used to calling them by it it doesn't really make much of a difference, does it?

Based on the structure of the names, it sounds that Daemyn is of the winged people, and Jonas is of the Light Elves.

That's what you're looking for, correct?

[PS I like the name Ixtli. Sounds like a Native American name. whee ]
