I need a bit of advice on some of my characters' names. Somehow, I managed to accidently make two of them into allusions (though one is a bit of a stretch). The three characters involved in this problem are Cain, Adele, and Evelyn. Cain isn't really an issue in and of himself, as I meant for the Biblical allusion (and one of the others actually refers to it in the text, too). But I realized last night as I was writing that Adele sounds/looks a hell of a lot like Abel, and Evelyn is going to make people do the Biblical Eve association. Later in the story, Evelyn is going to gain knowledge that she shouldn't have, so eerily enough it might work. I'm mostly worried about whether people will associate Adele->Abel, and if there would be an issue with the fact that Evelyn is technically the "Abel" to Cain's "Cain." At the same time though, I know these characters by these names, and wouldn't want to change them. (Plus I've got a whole obnoxious nickname thing going between Cain and Evelyn, with him calling her "Evey," that changing names would screw up...)

I hope that actually made sense; if anyone needs more information/clarification, feel free to ask.

Hmm, that is a bit tricky. If your characters' names just seem "right," and it would throw you off if you changed them, then I would keep the ones you have. I wouldn't have made the Evelyn-Eve connection immediately, and I don't think it matters too much. I'd keep the name Evelyn.

Cain and Abel are two names that go together, so I think the similarity between "Abel" and "Adel" would be a bit more noticeable--when I first read your post, I did see "Abel" for a split second before I realized it said "Adele". If you feel that it needs to be changed, then go ahead and do it. But if you're really used to the name Adele, and would feel uncomfortable using a different name for that character, then I'd go ahead and leave it...I really don't think it's too big of a deal. Readers would probably be okay with it.

Maybe you could change "Adele" to "Adelle," since there's less of a visual connection to "Abel" with that spelling.

Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to leave Evelyn as is, but I'm going to start finding an alternative for Adele. (I don't like the double L spelling, which is why I used the single originally.) I think hearing that you originally saw her name as Abel shows that I need to do that, because I really don't want people to make that connection. Hopefully I'll be able to find something that I like as much; I'll get used to whatever it is eventually, most likely. If I don't, I could always change it back.

I was trying to decide on a name for my character when another name for her just popped into my head. I like it, and I think it suits her well. The problem is, it just happens to be my mother's name. That had nothing to do with why I thought of that name, but it's a cause for concern. Is it a bad idea for my character to share a name with someone close to me?

Will your mother take it to be reflection off of her? If she will, then it is probably best to think of another name but if she won't then go ahead and use it! smile

Okay, thanks. 3nodding Truth be told, I wasn't planning on sharing the story with my mother. I'm extraordinarily secretive about my writing.

Haha, I am too, but its funny, I am only secretive if its people I know, or have seen in real life, on the internet I am like, "Go ahead, look at it! Look and love!"

so i need some help with a character. He's the bad guy in the story: a modern-day highschool setting take off of Phantom of the Opera. The main Character is Ellie, her best friend (and hero) is John.

Currently, the "bad guy"'s name is Ken (short for Kenneth). But his character has developed into a darker and more hidden guy. (plus i'm afraid people will see him along the line of the Barbie Ken...) He seems like a perfectly charming jerk on the surface, but once you get to know him, he's sweet and charming. But he's got anger issues (he kidnaps Ellie at the end for dumping him). oh, and did i mention he's a drug addict but hides it? He's also the lead actor (NOT gay) in the theater program.

Any ideas? i was looking at Dane, Lance, Kevin, Kale, Josh, Drake, Thom (Tom), Joe (Joey), Damian, Vince... but none of them quite fit...

I'm stuck on a name for my hero's pet alien cow-like creature. It has six legs, a lot of fur, and a surly temperament. I use a lot of Russian and Dutch words (with vowels swapped around or spelling changed) for the names of people or places, and was thinking about one of those, or one that would fit with them. Alternatively, I could just use a short descriptive nickname like "Ears" or "Brownie". Any ideas?

I do love the name Damian, but it's probably because of this show I watched years ago. The character that bore that name was a nice guy and all, a priest as a matter of fact, but he had this dark and mysterious aura around him. And since his name was pronounced in Spanish... ohhh man! even better!

But anyway, back to what you're asking. Name of a bad guy... hmm...

What about Devin, Donovan, or Darius? [Eh? All D's?] Or maybe Jude?

Hope I helped ^.^

"Nothing is true . . .

I'm not 100% sure on this . . . In the story I want to write -- which takes place in the Middle East during the Third Crusade -- I will have some Crusaders popping up, though I don't have it planned (this is just a rough idea). Anyway, I am wondering what types of names (both given and surname) the French and English had during this time, or if names have not changed at all during the past 900 years.

Um, sorry if that wasn't a very clear question. sweatdrop
