• Ferns unfolded, and birds broke out into song
Sunny and laughing, summer days melted together
    We couldn’t be wrong
We smiled and played in that blazing weather

We’d drop our glittering jewels into the stream
Watching with wistful smiles as they float away toward the sea
It all seems like a dream
While I quietly whispered,” Don’t leave me, don’t leave me…”

    An oriole sang
Showering us with its silvery dust
A clap of thunder sounded with a bang
My cries were carried away by a strong gust

Rain hammered, rustling the palmetto frond
Tears poured in rivers as I softly stroked his angelic head
What words could I say, to keep him from being gone?
The devil spoke softly the name of the dead
