• My unit prepared for the seen battle,
We know we would have to kill ‘em,
So we picked up our guns and marched onward,
Down in the living hell known as Antietam.

My unit marched through the deathly woods,
We came to a hill where we could see ‘em,
Their gray uniforms stood out in the sun,
Down in the living hell known as Antietam.

My best friend came over and said out loud,
“I’m not coming home this good ole’ Jack,”
Down in the living hell known as Antietam,
So he never survived the quick attack.

We waited in our positions for them,
We loaded our guns, ready to fire,
Down in the living hell known as Antietam,
And we thought Are we just men for killing.

We opened fire at them when they woke,
Bang! Boom! Bang! Boom! Another dropped down cold,
Down in the living hell called Antietam,
Then I learn why men in war are not bold.

I heard their dying screams that horrid day,
I stopped firing and saw their fate bound,
Down in the living hell known as Antietam,
To be the same as many, they fell to the ground.

I looked at my best friend fearing for him,
Down in the living hell called Antietam,
My friend was bleeding on the cold hard ground,
Then I looked at the dead and cried for them.

It sounded as if the trees were crying,
Down in the living hell known as Antietam,
My commander called out to me sharply,
But I was already running down the path.

Down in the living hell known as Antietam,
I stopped to breathe and think of what I’ve done,
I started to cry for my dead best friend,
Then I heard cheers of joys and knew we won.

Away from the hell known as Antietam,
I ran cause I knew those cheers were false and hallow,
Now I think of him, my true friend for life,
And all I think of is that cold dead corpse.
