• There were some rumours about a boy who didn't talk at school, not even to the teachers, however he wasn't mute, he just was never good at expressing himself like the way others were, and cause of this he had no friends, his grades were still high, though most teachers were worried about him, they worried about how he would fit in with the rest of the students, they'd always see him sitting in his little corner every recess, never saying anything, or moving from that same spot, some of the other students even tried saying hello to him, though all he did was gave them a blank stare, after a couple of months the other students finally gave up on him.

The boy's most distinctive feature were his earphones, he'd always listen to them, even during class, but amazingly he could still catch up with the lessons, the teachers there never understood why he needed those earphones of his everywhere he went, but they didn't bother, they knew he wouldn't explain it to them anyways, some of the people who listened to his music found it awkward, what was more awkward was the fact that the boy listened to the same exact track everytime, only in a couple occasions he'd change it.

One day, the boy's class had a new student,a girl, she looked all around the classroom and looked at the students around her, she found everything to be normal except for one boy, she looked at the boy with the earphones and he did the same, their eyes met for a couple of minutes before he looked down to the book he was reading, the girl asked the teacher who the boy was, but the teacher just gave her a stare and ushered her to move to her seat, once she got herself comfortable in her new class, she looked to the side to find the boy still reading his book, only stopping for a minute or two to write down the notes the teacher wrote on the blackboard, she somehow found his weird behavior interesting, and planned to talk to the boy at recess.

At recess, the girl walked around the school grounds looking for the boy, and found him seated on the staircase in the far corner of the ground floor, she walked over to him and asked.

"Why are you sitting alone here all by yourself?"

The boy looked up at her but didn't reply, then went back to sitting down and listening to his music, the girl wasn't about to give up, for she wanted to be friends with the boy, and so she asked another question.

"Mind if i sit here with you?"

The boy then moved a bit to the side so that the girl would have enough space to sit down, once she got comfortable, she stared at the boy for what seemed like 5 to 10 minutes, even though he wasn't doing much, she was still fascinated by the boy, she wanted to know more about him, wanted to know what his hobbies were, and what he liked, but most of all she wanted to know what he was listening to, and so she asked.

    "What are you listening to?"

The boy then took off one of his earphones and handed it to her, she gently took hold of it and placed it in her ear, and the melody that followed took her by surprise, for it was one that only feelings could describe, she suddenly felt what the boy was feeling, she was shocked, and tears came running down her face, she looked at the boy who only continued to look down to the floor, she now knew what he was going through, she knew what he felt, cold and alone, she took off the earphone and returned it to him, she now wondered if he had always lived like that, he couldn't have, a normal person would've gone mad living like that, but then he wasn't a normal person.

It was almost time to leave school, the girl didn't talk much to the boy much after recess, just giving him quick glances every now and then, though she did wave goodbye to him and he did the same, when she ran out of the school trying to catch her bus, she found that it had already left, it looked like she was going to have to walk home, now she had some time to herself to think about her experience with the boy and his "music", the tune still rang in her mind, she now knew how he felt, how sad and cold he was.

When she got home, she found the place empty and a message was left on the fridge saying that there were leftovers to eat for her dinner, she heated it up and sat down to eat, it was fairly delicious, just enough to satisfy her for the night, afterwards she went up to her room to get started on her homework, it didn't take her long since it was simple English and Math, after that she lied down on the bed and stared at the ceiling, it didn't last long for she heard a noise outside, she wondered if it was her parents coming home from work, but instead saw the boy walking into the house across the street, wanting to meet him she changed into something more casual and ran out to greet him, she said hello and needed an excuse to see his house and so she asked.

    "May i come in?"

The boy unlocked the door and invited her in, she slowly walked inside the doorway and made way for the boy to enter as well, the place wasn't that big, the girl watched as the boy prepared his dinner and ate it, he looked up from his plate of food and gestured to invite her to eat as well, she answered with a shake of her hand and said that she'd already eaten, the boy nodded and went back to his food, the girl was getting quite bored of just sitting there watching the boy eat, and so she turned to him and asked.

    "May i see your bedroom?"

The boy nodded and pointed to a set of stairs to his left, the girl stood up from her seat and said thanks, she then proceeded up the stairs towards the boy's room, once she got to the second floor, she came to a hallway with a door at each side, she then walked towards the door on the right side and peered into it, inside was a bed fit enough for two and a bedside table on it's right side with a lamp atop it, floral wallpaper decorated the walls and there was also a cabinet show casing some business suits and some dresses, the girl then noticed that this was the room of the boy's parents and so she left.

After closing the door properly, the girl walked quickly to the other door and went inside, the room was neat and tidy, not a single speck of litter could be found in the whole room, her eyes darted all over searching for something interesting but fell on a book that lay on a desk, she walked to it and picked it up gently not wanting to scratch or otherwise harm it's cover, she scanned all over the book for a name and then read it.

    "Mathias....is that his name?"

The girl pondered on and on while stil holding the book in her hands, she could hear some washing going on downstairs, she figured it was the boy cleaning up after dinner, she decided to hold on to the book as she continued to look through the room, she saw nothing but papers and books and some stationery, she then plopped herself down on a chair after she was done, she didn't realize she was still holding the book when a thought came into her mind, she wanted to OPEN the book and read it, though she knew she shouldn't for it was the boy's one private posession but she couldn't help but open it, besides she'd just be peeping for a minute or two.

She was just about to open the book when she saw the boy appear at the doorway, his eyes looking at the book that lay in her hands, she felt guilty trying to open it and gave it immediately, he reached out his own hand and took it, he then fixed it into a bookshelf and then grabbed some CDs that were in a rack beneath it, the girl wanted to apologize for trying to invade his privacy and so she started with small-talk.

    "Is your name Mathias?"

The boy turned and nodded, he then picked one of the CDs he was holding and popped it into a player, a few seconds later music began to play, it was the same melody she had heard the day at school, the girl wondered why he listened to this gloomy music everyday, Mathias then walked to his bed and laid down with his arms under his head, the girl still wanted to converse with Mathias, even though all he did was nod and shake his hand, at least he still answered, she still felt a little guilty and so she said.

"Hey, i'm sorry, i didn't mean to open the book, will you forgive me?"

Mathias just smiled and shrugged, she figured she was forgiven and thus she felt relieved, the two of them fell silent for the remainder of the night, it was saturday the next day and so she didn't mind going home late, though she was getting a bit sleepy, she still wanted to stay for another 5 minutes, she decided to keep on talking just to pass the time.

"Hey Mathias, do you always listen to this?"

Mathias nodded in reply and the girl looked down to the floor, she suddenly felt sorry for him, for he felt cold and sad all by his lonesome self, she then moved towards him and Mathias sat up in shock, she threw her arms around him and held him tightly, for she had fallen in love with this boy, the boy who didn't talk but who could express himself with music, tears ran down her face and her heart started racing, she couldn't contain herself and held him tighter as she told him.

"Mathias, you don't need to be alone,i'll be here with you, because now, you'll never feel alone, and you'll always have me to lean on."

Just then, the music changed to something more soothing, the girl opened her eyes to see that tears were running down Mathias' face, the music was all she could hear, it was different from the one she was used to hearing, Mathias then relaxed and laid down again and the girl did the same, the two looked at each other, with nothing but the soft playing music going through their minds as they held hands, and slept through the night.

For the following days and nights, the girl and Mathias have been going home from school ending with her staying over, there have been gossips about this at school, but the two of them didn't really mind it, for the two of them loved each other, even the world stood still for the two of them, for these short but meaningful days, Mathias was happy for once.

Though, a few days after, Mathias didn't go to school, the girl wondered where he was, she checked his house and found it empty, she even knocked on it several times to see if he was there, but no answer was returned, she got worried but then gave up, for she thought he had disappeared completely.

however, in a park nearby Mathias was sitting on a bench, holding his mp3 player in his hands, but without the use of his earphones, for his mp3 had broke, he had tripped on his way to school in the morning and never went, he knew that she would be worrying about him but decided to skip school anyways, he would be staying in the park till late night, he would never budge from that spot.

Just then, the girl arrived looking for him, Mathias was surprised she had gone looking for him for all this time, he ran up to her and gave her a hug, she asked where he had been and he showed her the broken mp3 player, she stared at it and then rummaged around in her bag to get something: a set of earphones, she asked Mathias to put one in his ear, and out of it came his music, the same music that the two of them listened to every night following the first day they met, Mathias was filled with joy and she gave him a hug, and then another miracle happened.

    "Thank you...." He said.

The girl looked up at his face and smiled, for she had finally heard Mathias' voice, it was soft and as soothing as the music that played in the earphones, but in that moment, Mathias took off the earphone and gave it back to her, and said.

"I won't be needing these anymore."

He threw his earphones away towards the sea and looked back to the girl and smiled, saying.

    "Let's go...Emily."

    "Yes...Mathias." She said in reply.

The two held hands and walked off toward their homes, always remembering...That even words...Can be expressed...Through music.
