• It is said that things happen for a reason, but do they all? Are we sure that some are by accident and completely change our future? That's what happened to me. I never knew my parents for when a week after I was born, my mother died of typhoid and my father left me. My birth certificate says I was born in Washington but the greatful orphanage, in New York, took me in under their roof. Here I am, 16 and reay to see the world for myself. The nanny who took care of me gave me a letter from my mother that she wrote after I was born and knew she was going to die. It had my name, Hattie and she wrote: do not open until 16 years of age. I opened the letter.

    Dear Hattie,
Oh my darling child, I know I will die soon. You are the most beautiful baby anyone could ask for. I am torn that I will not get to see you grow up. I left 50 pense with you so that you can care for yourself. I will be watching you in heaven.
    goodbye my darling angel,
    Your mother, Lottie.

A tear came to my eye as I finished reading it. My nanny came back with a beautiful dress with the pattern of roses on it and 50 pense like the letter said. I was finally on my own.
