• The nurse walked into a room with white walls, a TV, and approximately 2 tons of flowers, get well cards and presents. There was a hospital bed with a 16-year-old boy as its occupant. The nurse was carrying a tray of pills.
“How are we doing today? Do you remember anything yet? Your name? Where you live? Who your parents are?” the nurse inquired.
The boy looked down dejectedly. “Nothing. Not a single memory. Not about how I got here, who I am or who I knew.”
As the nurse was setting the boys mandatory pills on his bedside table, she remembered his newfound amnesia was still a touchy subject. Just yesterday there was a magnificent car crash on an intersection in the center of town. The other man in the car was killed on impact. When the paramedics arrived on the scene the boy was unconscious in the smashed and crumpled remains of the car. When he finally awoke in the ambulance he didn’t know where he was, how he got there, or even who he was. When he arrived at the hospital he was identified as Jacob Wright. He lived with his Uncle John, who was the other person in the car. Jacob’s parents had died when he was little.
But when told of the fate of his uncle, Jacob didn’t recognize his name. All the cards and flowers came from far away relatives and best friends. He did not recall a single person. It was as if his entire life before the car crash was nonexistent to him. As if his mind had been wiped clean.
The doctors had diagnosed him with Global Amnesia, an extremely rare case of amnesia where the patient looses all of their former memory. They said it may take a few hours, or even a few days for Jacob’s memory to come back.
After the nurse left, Jacob decided to try to get some shut eye. As his eyes shut he slowly slipped into sleep. In his dream, there was a man with a happy expression on his face. The man seemed to be telling Jacob a story. Suddenly he recognized the face but couldn't place the name. Then somehow he recalled that this was his Uncle John. They must have been going out to town. Then John walked to the car that would soon be smashed to pieces in the intersection. Jacob followed him to the car and got into the passenger seat. John looked so joyous he couldn’t even talk. When they started driving, John seemed to calm down and it looked like he was about to tell him something. Then from nowhere a car came at them head on.
Jacob bolted upright in his bed sweating and breathing heavy. There was a knock on the door and the nurse came in. “You have a visitor Jacob.” She said. In walked a man that looked just like Jacob did, with his green eyes and dark curly hair. The man pulled up a chair and looked Jacob in the eye.
“Hello Jacob. You probably don’t remember me. Especially with the amnesia and what not." The new visitor looked uncomfortable." Well you may or may not believe this but… I’m your dad.” The stranger said.
Without warning, memories filled his head with images of him and his father playing in the backyard, going on fishing trips, wrestling. Then came some memories of his mother making cookies in the kitchen, reading story books, watching the fire snap and crack in the furnace.
A million and one questions popped into his head. But the first on to pop out of his mouth was, “Where have you been for the past ten years!?” Jacob exclaimed. He knew he should be relieved to finally be reunited with his father. Or joyous that he wasn’t actually dead. But instead a rage boiled inside of him for all the important moments his dad had not been there for.
Jacobs Father suddenly had an uncomfortable look on his face “You may not believe what I am about to say but… we, your mom and I, are… secret agents.”
Jacob was dumbfounded. He couldn’t believe his father had come up with such a stupid excuse. But before Jacob could get a word out, his father burst into an explanation.
“When we had a child your mother and I were the happiest people in the world. You were our own little bundle of joy. But through the years, we started to get more dangerous missions. Even going after leaders of countries, prime ministers. We worried that some time, we might not come back from one of these missions, or our cover would be blown and the people we were spying on might find out about you, use you to get to us. We couldn’t risk it. We gave you to our best friend, the person we could trust the most in this world, John Black. You knew him as your uncle.
“He was assigned to keep you safe from anyone that tried to harm you. The car crash was intentionally set up to kill you. That’s what I came here for. I was wondering if you would like to join our agency. You will be protected, fed, and have a roof over your head. Plus you get to see me and your mother again. What do you say Jacob?”
His father stuck his hand out for Jacob to shake on it. Jacob was contemplating very hard. This would be a chance for a great adventure. This is what every boy dreamed of doing. So Jacob took his father’s hand.
    “When do I start?”
