• As I ran I saw how truly moronic it was to enter the forest on a night like this, dark and with a thick mist covering the ground. I dared not look back, I could already feel their breath on my neck, and it was so cold; it sent chills up my spine. The forest felt as though it was growing as I tried to near the exit. Where is it! I kept running, my breath jagged and short; I couldn't breathe, but I couldn't stop. I looked around desperately, but visibility must have been close to none; only white was seen. My legs slowed and I quickly regretted it. My heart was caught in my throat as one of the creatures behind me, grabbed my ankle. My frail body soon made contact with the mist covered forest floor, leaving my wide eyes to stare up into the red eyes hovering above me. I couldn't move, nor make a sound; I could only lay and wait.
I smiled to myself as a song crept into my head

Great time to smile! You're about to be killed by these things!

The creature didn't attack me right away; it waited for its brethren to catch up. Soon six pairs of eyes were staring at my weak body. My eyes refused to shut as I stared up into my death. I felt my body shake from fear and the chill of the air. These creatures seemed to make everything around me colder with each passing second; it felt as though my very life was being sucked away as I stared at them. A pair of eyes that were above my head made a quick motion, soon its mouth was on my neck.
Was it seriously doing this? Was it going to murder me like a vampire?
My jagged breathing continued as I felt two sharp teeth against my neck, I wanted to scream, to do anything; but I couldn't, everything was happening so fast. Yet at the same time, it was happening in slow motion.
Then I felt it. The two points broke the surface of my pale skin and sunk in. I opened my mouth to scream, but a small noise came out; not loud enough to be heard by anyone nearby. This was the end of me. The creature that had his teeth in me began to do something I couldn't quite describe. It felt like it was putting something in my blood, and taking it at the same time.
Almost as suddenly as the feeling started it stopped, with a painful jerk from my neck. My eyes closed at the action and refused to open again. I could only use two of my senses now.

My body was numb from the bitter cold around me.
My taste buds turned to ash.
    My voice had left me.
    My eyes were closed.

I could only smell the sickly sweet aroma of the creatures. Their smell was so overpowering, like too much icing on a cake. I could hear low snarls and hisses in my ear. My head tried to cringe away from the maker of this noise, but I was frozen.
A wolf howled in the distance. How I loathed the wolf now, to be running wild in the night. I concentrated my mind on the wolf, listening to its sorrowful howls. Was it in pain?
    Was it lost?
Where were the others in its pack?
My mind tried to call to it. My mother always used to say the wolf was my spirit guide. I used to think our Native American heritage was a waste of time. But as I lay on the ground beneath these snarling creatures, I wanted to leave my mind; so I wouldn't feel the pain of my death.
The smell was penetrating my mind barrier; soon I lost my focus on the wolf. The only thing in my mind was the scent of the creatures, it was choking me. I could feel one of the creatures next to my face; I tried to shut my eyes tighter.
Suddenly the wolf's howl was closer, but it sounded like it had found its pack. I smiled at the happiness of the beast as I was nearing my end. The creature breathed on the front of my throat, I feared the worst.
But nothing happened; I couldn't even feel the creature near me anymore. I listened more intently, I could hear the creatures breathing, but it was low and far between. Another noise reached my ears, the noise of paws on the dead fallen leaves. Soon the sound grew louder and heavier. Does that make sense? The paws sounded heavier.
Another scent mixed with the sickly sweet, it was a deep, woodsy smell. Something like soil mixed with a type of Cologne.
The scent came closer, the noises grew louder and soon there were two voices. The snarling and hissing of the creatures, and the growling and howling of the wolves; it was hard to figure out which was which when they began to fight. I heard a loud CRACK and felt something heavy fall beside me. The scent of it told me it was the creature, but soon the sweet smell began to fade to that of a decaying corpse. Many growls and hisses were exchanged and small whimpers were also heard. I wanted to slap my hands over my ears and wake up from this nightmare.
Just as I finished my thought, all became quiet. The growling stopped. The hissing stopped. No more whimpering. The silence was soon broken by footsteps walking over to my paralyzed body. A thousand questions ran through my mind, none with answers. The 'thing' bent down next to me and my nostrils smelt the woodsy scent. I felt safe, my saviors had survived (I could hear the retreating steps of the wolves) and I was found. Two arms lifted my body from the ground with a slight grunt.
I was not only found, but found by a human! Hopefully someone that could take me away from the potential murder scene, I just hope they wouldn’t want to take me home. My heart leapt with joy.
"You're safe now. Just rest." the kind voice told me and I didn't hesitate to obey. My eyes opened for the first time in what felt like hours. A man, maybe a little older than myself was carrying me. I closed my eyes again, just catching a glimpse of his black hair.
